Ideas: using cds for centre pieces

i am trying to think of how i can decorate aol cd to use as center pieces for a wedding besides just putting a candle in the middle of them

What if you placed the cd (silver side up) on top of a base of some sort...like a candle stick holder (check the thrift stores for cheap ones or the dollar store for the crystal type ones). Then take thin fishing line (say 5 strands or so)and tape it on the bottom side and thread it up through the hole so it comes out and hangs over the sides ...then thread a few pretty crystal beads or beads that are the colors of the wedding (so they dangle over the sides). Then then place a candle on top of that (a votive which could even be in a small votive holder for wax drips). The elevation would give the table decoration a little more drama and interest instead of just putting it flat on the table. I would also anchor the whole thing using some sort of fabric (maybe a chifon?) around the center piece so the center piece isn't just "floating" in the middle of the table. The candle stick bases could be varying heights from table to table. Depending on how many you have and # of tables you could also place 3 arrangements on the table at varying heights. Or just is fine too. Anyway...hope this gives you a start...I'm thinking I'm gonna go try this now...

Recycled CD
Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-1645

http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/crafting/artic ... 57,00.html

This picture of a recycled CD does not do it justice... it is really beautiful.
The CD was drilled with a whole bunch of holes & then was threaded & decorated with flowers.

Your Name just gave me aNother idea for crafting with CD's. Lady Bugs of course. Paint them red or orange and black, glue on black spots and have a Suncatcher Lady Bug. Cute cute cute!!

I have made CD Crows before and they are cute too! Add a straw hat, cut in half, glued onto the CD, glue on some sunflowers and a raffia bow, wiggle eyes, cut out a beak from a paper sack, outlined in black streaks and hang the finished CD Crow on a Shepherds hook outside with a green 3/4" wide ribbon, strung through the hat and glued on the underside. Cute for Fall.
Happy Crafting! Calico

How very pretty! Has anyone tried microwaving the cd's yet? They come out pretty cool looking , and each one is unique. Just be careful, if you do it too long they can really smell up the place. 3 seconds usually does the trick!

Very creative use of a CD. You've done it again. VERY BEAUTIFUL!!! What did you do to the center to give it a star burst look??? Are those all glass beads you've used??? Thanks...Char :0)

I have these instructions filed in my crafts file. I made them last year....not a week ago....

[> Re: Eileen - CD Danglers? -- Eileen, 21:44:53 05/06/04 Thu [1]

Okay. I have uploaded 10 pics of my cd dangelers and regular danglers....

Pictures: Eileen's CD & Regular Danglers:

Go to the below addy.....use herronme and 001010 to login

http://www.imagestation.com/album/pictu ... 4286948877

Here are the instructions....

I get the wire at home depot . They cut it off a roll by the foot. Think it is #6 and #8....

There are 7 strands of copper wire wound together for 36cents a foot (which is really 7 feet) and 19 cents a foot for the 6 strand wire (which is actually 6 feet for 19cents. No stripping either. I use the smaller wire for caging the beads and the heavier for the bends. have only been doing this for a little over a week not sure of the terms. you DO need the jewelers pliers tho.

marbles I got online. they have an awesome selection.
And flat marbles and smaller marbles at dollar stores and Michaels.
You must see this site. It is where I got my wigjig and they have over 1,000 FREE patterns....
http://www.wigjig.com/

The marbles are from

http://emarbles.com/mega_loose.htm

I just painted the starburst. Just take a flat craft paintbrush, dip just the tip straight across and then start in the middle of the cd and make a line out towards the top of the cd.... I did the first stripes with the folkart metallic antique copper, then went over it with the gleams copper. Easy....

They are just old cd's. used goop outdoor glue to glue together. drilled the holes....I did paint another marble for the back so it looks good on both sides.....

I used a flat marble for the center. painted the copper on the back and it blends right in with the paint.
it was an amber color to begin with but matches perfectly now.

I also have clear marbles I will paint to match the colors on any others cd's I do.

The original idea for the starburst was from a cd windchime I saw. No name on it or I would surely give her credit....

If you need cd's go to target, sears, book stores, the post office. They are free. The gal at the post office said to help myself....

So many gals have asked for directions for thr Danglers as I call them. As I said this was not my original idea.(they were actually popular in he 70's as suncatchers) I saw the Doo Dah garden Jewelry site a year ago and was hooked but was sure I could not make anything as neat. http://www.gardenjewelry.com/

Then I happend onto Garden Junk at Gardenweb...and saw some even neater ones...Cyndy who is the local jewlery goddess instructor nearby came over to my house, I got to kiss her ring...LOL and she showed me a few technques and the rest is history....

Someone at garden junk was so kind as to make up a FAQ area with all the answers as to how to make the danglers as I call them..

Go to this addy .......

http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/junk/

go to the FAQ and scroll down to wire art.....woo hoo

also awesome other cool ideas.....

You too can make these, yes you can....

Idea, link: uses for cds and their boxes

Subject: Anyone seen the new AOL 9.0 cd box?

I like to use the cds to crochet around. But when this cd arrived the box itself was the coolest. It's a pressed wood and is very solid. The top lifts open. It would be easy to paint or even cover with fabric. It's the perfect size for a crocheted snowflake to be tucked inside and the outside of the box decorated for Christmas. Anyone who doesn't want theirs can send it to me :O)

o.k....I told my husband to be on the lookout for this when if it comes in the mail and he said we already got one and then tossed it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ACK!!!!!

[> Re: Anyone seen the new AOL 9.0 cd box? -- flo, 12:57:44 07/04/04 Sun [1]

You could make mini books using an accordian fold on the inside for pages similar to these projects:

http://www.drstamping.com/accordian1.html

http://www.dazzled.com/strangecraft/pro ... yealt.html

Like the first project you could separate the covers or you could leave them hinged and make it like the second project.

You can decorate the box for a special occasion and send an altered CD greeting inside:

http://www.mcuniverse.com/index.php?272

http://www.canadascrapbooks.com/ubbthre ... y/1203.php

ONE FOR THE CD CARDBOARD JACKET IF YOU HAVE ANY:

http://www.gingerstamp.com/project/cdindex.html

AND IF YOU NEED MORE IDEAS FOR THOSE AOL TINS/BOXES:

You can adapt any of these projects. They can be painted, decoupaged, stamped, collaged, and more.

These sites should give you plenty of ideas:

[> Re: cd picture frames -- flo, 12:56:38 07/05/04 Mon [1]

The best way to explain it is to tell you to look at the backs of other picture frames you have around the house. The stands are just pieces of cardboard with a triangle cut-out that swings out to support it. All you need to do is make a triangle out of some cardboard, fold one edge to make a tab (this will be glued to the back of the CD) and glue it to the back.

Hubby has used both a power drill and a drill press....1/8 inch bit when he had drilled holes the CD's for me. The drill press is easier to use of course.

Here's one:
...with a glue gun, make designs on the top of the case. Then sponge on 2-3 colors of paint. Then take gold rub & buff to highlight the raised areas. Put greetings, jokes, photos, etc. inside.

Heidi on the old Aleene's show demonstrated this idea.

Subject: Promotional CD's

What ideas do you have for the CD's that come in the mail? We have several and would like to find a use for them instead of just tossing them away. Being the pack rats that we are, we haven't done that! Hee hee!!

Melody,
I take them and paint them as ornaments. You can do all kinds, snowmen, pumpkins, scarecrows. We've even made them into puppy faces.

Another cute idea if you have teenage girls, is to hang them by a string from the ceiling... and glue faces of their favorite rock stars and movie stars onto them. My daughter thought they were the "coolest".

[> Re: Promotional CD's -- Jessica, 10:32:13 04/22/04 Thu [1]

If you have kids, you can cut a small slit in the center to where a penny can fit tightly in the hole. They make great tops. My son decorated his and likes to see how many he can get spinning at one time. It's cheap entertainment!

lots of links posted for you to see Melody...

I personally silicone glue 2 together with shiny side out.. drill holes and hang beads and things.... then hang them in the garden...looks pretty when the wind twirls them... the sun casts all the colors in the garden...
keeps the bunnies and birds out of trouble too... hehehe

I've made adorable Sunflower CD Crows to hang outside from a shepherds hook. The backside is the sun catcher, So Pretty when it blows softly in the breeze casting it's rainbow colors everywhere!! Paint the front black, glue on wiggly eyes and a beak made from a paper sack outlined with black markings, a straw hat that's been cut in half, add a Sunflower and raffia tie. WaLa, a CD Sunflower Crow garden decoration.
Have fun Cre~A~Ting!!

You Know how teenagers Love to hang things from their inside rearview mirrors. Take 2 CD's glued together, shiney sides out, velcro on a small teddy bear decorated with a mortor board and sash with their school colors and mini diploma. They can also hang their graduation tassels around it. They think it's the COOLest!

Subject: Make a fun little top out of a CD

copied this......

I also made a fun little top out of a CD! Which brings me to mention an entirely different crafting material – that 3-D squeeze paint that comes in little tubes and is available at any craft store. It’s often used on fabric, to decorate T-shirts. You squeeze it on in whatever design or nice border or something and then wait for it to dry. BEFORE YOU DO THIS, take the CD and cut out two small notches right in the center hole – enough to securely fit a penny into. Test that out to see that the penny stays put. Then remove the penny, set the CD on your workspace and squeeze a nice spiral from inside to the outer edge, with some colorful 3-D squeeze paint. Let it dry. Then pop the penny back in. You may want to add a touch of glue to keep the penny in place. When that dries, give it a spin! I did this on “Smart Solutions,” and a couple of the camera guys asked to keep the little spinners I’d just made on the show to play with!

Subject: CD crafts?

Ok, here's the deal. I saw these great fish made from cds at a flea market. I thought they would be perfect for my third graders to do. I sent home a note asking people to save them if they got them in the mail.....Each student has brought in at least 3 each...great!.....One student's parent works for the USPS. He brought in at least 150 that were thrown away by people on his mom's mail route...So, my problem is...what can I have third graders make with these?
We're doing the fish this week and hanging them from the ceiling. I'll try to get a pic of them. I'm just brain dead on the cd craft idea right now.

could cut them in small (not to small) square pieces and cover a styrofoam ball with them and make a hanging disco ball.

[> Re: CD crafts? -- Kathy, 01:27:08 02/05/05 Sat [1]

An idea I am going to do is make coasters out of them. I want to cover the outside or paint them and put a circle of cork in the center for a glass.

[> Re: CD crafts? -- Melis, 05:04:20 02/05/05 Sat [1]

It is a long time to Christmas but we made a tree from them in our After school club.
1) We stuck a small piece of magnet to the back of 10 CDs. (Near the top).
2) We added a border of glitter around the edge of each CD.
3) The children made small christmas symbols and stuck a small round magnet to the back of each one. (The magnets must fit into the hole in the middle of the CD).
4) We then stuck it to the filing cabinet in a triangle shape and added a pot made from fabric covered card. The children got to take home their christmas shapes and use them for fridge magnets and we can use the CDs again next Christmas.
I would like to say this was my idea but I got it from a workshop I did run by Wiltshires scrap store.

[> Re: CD crafts? -- wendy, 21:02:04 02/04/05 Fri [1]

how about using them for the center of a flower. The kids can cut petals out and glue them on the cd. might be a great idea for mothers day. oh how about painting them white, adding bunny ears, nose etc for easter. Maybe suns, too. if you want to save them you could paint em orange for pumpkins; making a turkey out of them; mabe a tree ornament with the child's picture in the center.
What about gluing colored jewels(found in the craft store by the beads) on them and hanging from the ceiling. might be pretty when the sun hit them-kinda like a prism.

Heyas...
Or someone could cut the cd's into smaller wedges, and the children could create some sort of mosaic (spelling) artwork on potplants or paper or anything else that you have handy...

Could make a mobile with a full cd decorated at the top, and hang the smaller cut pieces off the cd, kinda like those mobiles that use small mirrors...

Hmmm... dunno what else...

Links/Ideas - Make a Fish (or Bird) by Recycling CD's

Subject: CD Fish craft

I seen a cute fish craft at a car show this week end. I'll try and explain it but it's hard to do w/o drawing it. You use two cd's lay one down words up. cut out craft foam to make a head fin heart for the lips, tail fin and bottom fin. They used yellow. Then you would glue them in place and then put the other cd words down glued.(fish body) Then they took a piece of craft foam and cut a piece to stick threw the cd holes to add the swim fins. Then they put a big google eye on both sides of it and hung it from their out door tent. It was real cute. I hope you can picture it. I wish I could have taken a picture of it, sorry.

Well, silly me I found the instructions. I thought this was new, I guess it's not. I think they would be cute to hang by a childs window for a sun catcher or outside to distract birds from a garden

How funny you mentioned this. I am now in the process of making these for a craft fair in October. I use funky film or any glittery paper I find. I like the paper because it makes them catch the sun more. I do laminate the paper to make it stronger. If I can I will post a picture of one.

Thanks for this idea Jodie, I have a stack of these CDs and a daughter that teaches kindergarten. She is always looking for something for the children. She's going to love it.

I love this !
You can do Birds like this also !!!
THANK YOU !!

I have been making these for about 6 months now. They sell okay. I use different color fun foam for all the parts. One fish is not all yellow or red or blue. Each piece of fun foam is a different color on each fish. Very colorful. Hugs, Diane

Glue Advice When Making CD Fish

what kind of glue? Directions don't say and the hot glue gun
doesn't work and neither does the tacky...
Before I mess up any more please tell what kind of glue you use to glue foam to vinyl.
Thanx,
Sunny

Sunny,
You could try the Silicone Adhesive that stuff sticks to vinyl , bath tubs , fish tanks, foam and even my fingers. I even like it to do 3D pictures with. Spread it thin or thick. It takes longer to set and dry , but I like it.
I hope this works for you.

When I make my fish - I use hot glue gun. I don't know why it is not working for you. Hugs, Diane

thanx Motherhen and Dianenanato5 for the glue advice.
The hot glue just peels right off a vinyl cd when it cools.
I needed something more permanent. I found out today liquid nails works great on cd's.

How to Alter Instructions to Make CD Birds

Subject: Bird Patterns site - CD ??

http://www.daniellesplace.com/html/christmas_page2.html

Near the center of this page are the patterns I use.

Ladies I have used the patterns for CD Birds , from this site , by taking the > tail, beak, wings and using the CD as the body.
I have not found or used another site idea, just this one.

Sorry if some of you were running the search sites for CD Bird patterns.
Forgive me please.
Mother Hen

[> Re: Bird Patterns site - CD ?? -- Diane From Pa, 20:08:02 06/16/05 Thu [1]

I will give this a try. Did you just glue the wings onto the side of the CD? Or did you make it go through the hole in the center of the CD like the fish? Thanks alot. Sorry for all confusion. I just thought that it sounded like there was a picture and pattern for the bird.
Hugs, Diane

[> Re: Bird Patterns site - CD ?? -- Mother Hen, 20:19:46 06/16/05 Thu [1]

Diane,
I just tacky glued the wings on the side as shown on the picture.
I just learned about the fin through the hole.
That wing trick , just may be a new idea in the bird CD craft.

I am going to do some for the porch, and I will use the foam to have it weatherized for the rain even, and the Silicone Adhesive for the glue.

Hey neighbor,
Would you have any pictures of the ones you made?? I'd love to see them )

Well Marlene,
The ones that we made were done in an after school group last year. You can get an idea of how they looked by visiting this site and in the middle of the page ,> there they fly. http://www.daniellesplace.com/html/christmas_page2.html

I'm gonna look through my back craft stuff or check at the Church to see if there are any around.
But I am gonna do some new ones with the foam.
The paper ones are easiest for the Children to cut out.
The foam is not an easy material for them to work with.
One my just be flying your way some day.
