IDEAS & LINKS: HOW TO DISPLAY PENNY POEMS

Subject: Penny Poem Question

I have a question regarding penny poems...How do you package them? I think the penny poem for teachers would be great for Teacher Appreciation Week or end of the year gift. I would like to try to "market" them at our school but not sure how. Would like something that I can use for all the penny poems. Thought about a small plastic zip bag, just not sure how well that would look. Open for suggestions. And thanks. I know you ladies and gentlemen will come up with some great ideas.

Hi Melinda,
I print the poem(vary the colors) on cardstock...I'll get as many as I can on one sheet...just enough so there is room to cut out the poems with decorative scissors...
I leave a margin on the left side...I'll cut small pieces of ribbon and fold them(like the Avon pink ribbon)...in the center I'll glue a brand new penny...
Then the poem is placed in a 3x4 craft bag...sometimes I'll use the larger bags...
Will try to get a photo to you tomorrow..
Hope this helps..

I like to do the poem in a note card with the penny in a crocheted circle on the left inside (found the crochet instructions on this site many months ago)- and the verse on the right inside of the card. I have been using blank note cards with picture on front and adding the verse printed on parchment to the card then I have an envelope to give it in. I also like to use a penny from the year I am giving the penny if possible. Although I did one for my neice's wedding but could not find a 2004 penny after going to the bank several times the bank tellers said they may not be in circulation yet this year. Just my 2 cents.

The 2004 pennies are hard to find but it seems that the banks are the last to get them. Found that last year when I was looking for the 2003. I was at Home Depot the other morning and found a roll. They were more than happy to sell them to me. Walmart had some too. What I do is when I'm paying for something, I check out the drawer and if I see a roll with the ends "curled" under exposing the face or back of the penny, I'll ask if they're 2004. It's still hit or miss that they're 2003 or 2004. If it's a roll with the ends flapped over, they're rolled by an individual and not at the treasury.

[> Re: Penny Poem Question -- valerie_nyr4, 18:03:29 02/25/04 Wed [1]

Yes, those 2004 pennies are elusive...
I just exchanged 20 rolls of 2003 for 2004!!!..Wal Mart was happy to oblige...now I can begin my graduation, wedding and baby pennies...
Funny how the big corps can get them and the banks have to rid themselves of the 2003 first...lol..
Happy crafting..

Re: penny poem needed -- Louise, 10:59:13 07/28/03 Mon [1]

Could someone tell me for the penny poems and key poems do you attach them to something or how do you make the whole thing. I did a penny in a little bag with a little verse but these verses all seem quite large.

[> Re: penny poem needed -- gingergirl, 12:11:28 07/28/03 Mon [1]

Louise, sometimes I do a book mark with the penny attached and for one of the key poems I framed the poem and an old skeleton key.
I'm going to use the halloween Penny Poem on a business card to hand out to the kiddies.

I was going to do the teacher penny poem and the bus driver one like I do a marble magnet. I have been selling the "lost your marble" for a long time. I print it out on a 3 x 5 blank index card, then laminate it, glue a small magnet on the back, and a marble on the front. These sell well for me.

Subject: ??? for all you KEY and PENNY sellers

I never could get people (shoppers at boutiques) interested in pennies and Keys, so have been reluctant to keep trying. Can you help me understand how you display and sell them to get attention. I think they are really cute. I must not be displaying them correctly. Any and all help would be appreciated. So many of you say they are great sellers for you.
Thanks in advance.

How are you displaying them now?? This might help us know what kind of advice to give you. I display all my survival, gag gift type kits on metal racks that I bought from a store that was going out of business. It is just perfect. Let us know and see how we can help.

[> Re: ??? for all you KEY and PENNY sellers -- linne, 20:16:36 06/28/04 Mon [1]

I am presently putting a mix of types in a basket on a table. I have a 'lucky penny' sign. I do put them is plastic bags with a topper on the bag.

[> Re: ??? for all you KEY and PENNY sellers -- julie, 10:15:08 06/29/04 Tue [1]

I have mine in their own baskets. One has graduation, one has the friendship, and one has sister keys.I laminated the type and attached it to a clothes pin which sticks out of the back.I have them sitting in the front of the booth. On my other gags i have them in their own seperate baskets inside on large basket.I do not do the pennies as they have not sold well for me.

Subject: Who does Penny Poems?????

Now that I have about 100 penny poems all printed on cards and put in bags, I have no idea what to charge....There're may be more ladies on here who would like to have this information, also. You know, curious minds want to know!!!

Can anyone tell us how they have displayed these successfully and what they charged?

I have never seen these in this area, so am hoping it will be something new here this year.

I actually have two sizes. I have larger ones, about 3 x 5
and smaller ones 2-1/2 x 3.

Please tell us your experiences with these.
Thanks and hugs,
Claudia

[> Re: Who does Penny Poems????? -- carmelita, 22:26:54 10/19/05 Wed [1]

Claudia... Got your email but thought I might as well post while I was here.

I do the smaller ones (2 1/2 x3 ) and I charge $1 for them whether it's one of those juried shows with the central register and they take out 15% or if I am doing a show where I am there collecting the money. Do pretty good with mine. Would imagine that $1.50 would be fair for the larger one.

Used to display them on the revolving racks (with hooks), but for me I have found that small baskets hold more or I display them in those plexiglass card displays.

Will try and take a picture maybe this weekend of my display. I will have to drag everything out and set it up for the pic.

If you are ever in a Walmart and see the workers stocking the shelves ask if they have any cardboard displays. While you are shopping check the shelves and endcaps.

I got two that used to hold Renuzits and they just gave them to me. Have had them for several years and they even had little matching carboard dividers. I use them for my gags and sometimes for my pennies.

The gal at Walamrt was all happy because that was two things she didn't have to drag to the dumpster.

Some stores (like Beverlys Fabrics, Savon etc actually throw away metal displays like the ones that hold the button cards!!! People are so wasteful.

Hope this helps.

What is a penny poem?

[> Re: Who does Penny Poems????? -- crafterwannabe, 20:43:49 10/21/05 Fri [1]

Julia - In our archives (link under the Craft Sayings banner at top of index page) there is an entire board devoted to Penny Poems.

When I did them a few years ago, I went by Valerie's suggestion on the Penny Poem Presentation thread. I chose a graphic border, put the poem on one side of the card allowing space for the ribbon with penny glued on top. Later I first glued a small yo-yo on the card, ribbon folded on top, then the penny.

[> Re: Who does Penny Poems????? -- Valerie, 20:53:01 10/21/05 Fri [1]

Hi Claudia,
I glue the penny on the ribbon...charge 75c...Sell them like crazy...now most of my pennies our brand new 2005...so I sell a great deal of baby and grand children..sometimes I give the pennies away to a mother/father/grandparent holding or wheeling a baby born in 2005...I still have a few 2004 and some customers were thrilled that I had a penny for their baby!
I even had a mom bring me 5 pennies with various years on them..I did a whole family...
Much success....
hugz

Where do you find new pennies. I like to use the bright and shiny ones but sometimes can't find them
Barboo

[> Re: Who does Penny Poems????? -- Candy, 13:55:35 10/22/05 Sat [1]

Barboo,
I have made tons of the penny poems to sell and I had a hard time finding the pennies, too. Sometimes I could luck up one of the banks in town, but not very often. Then I discovered I could find rolls of new pennies at Walmart. Ask at the registers or at the little stand behind the registers where the check out managers stand.
Good luck and happy crafting,
Candy

[> Re: Penny Poem package ? -- valerie, 09:36:35 01/25/06 Wed [1]

Good morning,julie...
I sell the penny poems at every show...check the archives..there are posts about how the pennies are displayed...try the penny poems board
I print the poems...I leave a margin on the left hand side..it is there anyway when printed..lol..
I fold ribbon (like the breast cancer ribbon),glue it to the cardstock in the margin...then glue the penny on top of the ribbon...
I know crafters who use graphics and just glue the penny to the top of the cardstock..
I don't laminate..the penny and the poem are placed in a 3x4 cello bag..
I can get a picture for you later this afternoon...
Have a great day...
I'll be crafting all day...
hugs
Valerie

Laminating/Gluing Penny Cards

Subject: ?'s about laminating penny cards

Okay I have questions about laminting penny cards. Can I put the penny on the card and laminate or do I laminate and then attatch the penny. I have the Duck brand heat leaminator from Walmart. How would I attatch the penny after I laminate? what glue works best? I want them for this weekend so allhelp is greatly appreciated.
thanks

Wendy, I have not made mine yet, but I would put the penny on top of the lamination. If you put it under, you will have air pockets around the penny....I know that as I laminated all my school things for years. I would use an emery board and scratch a small circle and put some glue down and then the penny. I plan on E6000 as Hot glue will make the penny come off. My plans are E6000 unless a more seasoned crafter knows better.

[> Re: ?'s about laminating penny cards -- penny, 22:14:35 01/25/09 Sun [1]

wendy,
I always laminate my cards first then add penny I use Hot glue. Works good for me.

[> Re: ?'s about laminating penny cards -- wendy, 22:41:58 01/25/09 Sun [1]

thanks ladies. that's really what I was thinking but I wasn't quite sure. I will give it a try.

thanks for your help

[> Re: ?'s about laminating penny cards -- KrafteeKaren, 02:14:01 01/26/09 Mon [1]

Wendy...laminate your sheets and then glue on your penny. We tried many different things including hot glue (sorry Penny it didn't work for us) and found that E6000 was the best. Make sure though before you put your cards in a bag (if you do) that you let the glue set for a while. Otherwise the smell does get caught up in the bag and is very over powering. DH also used regular Super Glue and it worked. One thing we never tried only because it came out on the market later was Gorilla glue.

[> Re: ?'s about laminating penny cards -- Carol Klee, 12:21:12 01/26/09 Mon [1]

Girls, Don't put the penny through the laminator. I did and now I get air pockets. It was only a small laminator not my good Duck one. I learned the hard way. lol Carol

[> [> Re: ?'s about laminating penny cards -- gator, 14:51:02 01/26/09 Mon [1]

Wendy, I laminate first, and then I use "dot" to attach the penny to the card. "Dot"s are self-adhesive on both sides, covered with a removable paper which allows you to attach the penny to the laminate with no muss, or fuss. Looks and holds great. Can be purchased at walmart, or any paper craft store. Hope this helps.

[> Re: ?'s about laminating penny cards -- Norma, 14:58:28 01/26/09 Mon [1]

Here's a silly question... What is a penny card and where can I see the project? Sounds like fun. Norma

[> Re: ?'s about laminating penny cards -- wendy, 17:06:48 01/26/09 Mon [1]

I really like the dots idea and I have some somewhere. do I need to use the emery board to scratch the laminated card?

I believe tje penny cards are in the archives.

[> Re: ?'s about laminating penny cards -- snuffles (as dense as 2 x 2), 20:33:51 01/26/09 Mon [1]

Ok ladies, I apologize for this very dumb question just blame it on the clogged head. Do take the poem (for pennies) print it on card and add the penny or do you add graphics with it? I'm sorry but I just can't visualize this.

[> [> Re: ?'s about laminating penny cards -- gator, 21:24:58 01/26/09 Mon [1]

Wendy, the dots hold very well and are concealed by the penny....I then put the whole works in a 3 x 4 bag with a zip lock top and sell them that way....buyers usually keep them right in the bag....in fact...I don't laminate mine...I just use the bags....works great. Have sold many that way. Bags can be purchased at Walmart.
