Here is the "survival kit" I just did this past week for my sister who turned 40. Most things came from the dollar store. For the mints, pills etc. we used candies like tic tacs, M&M's. Lotions and creams were also purchased at the dollar store and I just made little labels to put over the ones that were on the creams. We wrapped a box in "over the hill" wrapping paper, printed off this list and put it in the box with all the goodies. In the photo album, I put pix of her over the years and put a little poem in it about helping her remember who she is. The placard, we printed on the puter saying "priceless antique", at the top, Aged to perfection at the bottom and in the middle in large letters "Lordy Lordy I am 40! She wore it all day! She really got a kick out of the box of goodies.
We also found a powder compact that whistled when you opened it and made up a bouquet of suckers. We put them in a pot, wrote "40 SUX" on it. Instead of 40 suckers, we put red maple leaf suckers and ones that looked like fireworks as her birthday was on July 1st (Canada Day, and red maple leaves are VERY Canadian.
There are a lot of survival kit ideas on the net. I just picked ones I thought she would chuckle over.
By the way, my Brother bought her a T/shirt that just said "vintage"

Old Age Pills: take as directed.
Cup for teeth: because you & your teeth don't sleep together

What does his family (if he's married) think of this, do they enjo ice hockey too. Names of his wife and kids, best friend etc. Whoi doies he go with to watch it or is it just on TV. Feel free to e-mail if you don't want to put info on the site. I'm off work today, had a tummy bug., so I'll certainly have a go.

[> Re: Help - Poem for 40th -- Joan R, 04:23:24 02/05/04 Thu [1]

Hi Yvonne, thanks for your offer. My sons name is
David and he has lived wih his girl friend Alyson for 9 years (no children) They both go to Newcastle Arena to see the ice hockey the team is called Newcastle Vipers. They also go to most of the away matches, made too many friends to mention, although he likes football (UK variety) and goes with his friend John sometimes. He likes most American sports as he worked over there for a while. He also collects game worn ice hockey jerseys has had a few from America as well as home. They are off on holiday watching
ice hockey at various venues in America in a couple of weeks. This is their second time.
There I think that's all, I feel like I've written a book.

TIA (I do have another son and a daughter plus 3 grandaughters so I may be calling on your help again Ha ha!) luv Joan.

Ps I don't know how to e-mail from the forum

[> Re: Help - Poem for 40th -- Caboobie, 05:06:06 02/05/04 Thu [1]

Thanks Joan, I'll get started. I live in Newcastle, Gateshead actually and we had two of the Vipers at our school on Monday to give the children a talk on Healthy Eating and lifestyle. They also gave out free tickets to Saturdays match and one of the boys was presented with a signed top and hockey stick. They were so popular!! We had a party for one of my boys at the arena a few years ago and he too got to meet the ice hockey team and received a signed stick which is still in a cupboard somewhere. Can't remember the name they had then, possibly Cobras.

To e-mail from this site, you just have to click on the authors name (providing it is blue) and it will oen up a message box for you to send a e-mail.

[> Re: Help - Poem for 40th -- Caboobie, 05:23:56 02/05/04 Thu [1]

Come on, hurry get your skates on
We're gonna miss the match
Shouts David to his friend John
As out the door they dash

Its bound to be a good one
And it's starting pretty soon
Yes the Vipers are the best around
Ice Hockey champions of the 'toon

Now David's very sporty
He likes to watch the game
Be it ice hockey or football
He'll sit through it again and again

He's really very lucky
As Christine, I have to say
Enjoys watching this sport with him
Egging their teams on all the way

Be it Britain or America
You'll find them side by side
Screaming at the players
Their hearts filled full of pride

And now David has reached forty
Here's a wish for more to come
Have a really special day
Happy Birthday from your Mum

Check Shirley's Projects page for a list of 40 sayings to print, cut and put in a jar. You'll also find ideas in the Archive pages. Click on the search button and type Sucks in the box - it will bring up poem & presentation idea. After that type 40th in the box to see the other 40th birthday poems/ideas.

They say turning 40
means you're over the hill
but I don't believe it
there's life in you still.
So while 40 sucks
might be a turn of phrase
these forty lollipops
will brighten up your days.

[> Re: 40th birthday -- jenjoy, 21:36:04 04/13/04 Tue [1]

Here's one I did some time ago.

Heard you'll soon be havin'
The mighty big "4-0"
So here's a little gift
In case you're feelin' low
It's a sucker bouquet
So that you can "lick"
Your blues 'bout turnin' forty
To give you back your kick!
Hey bro' I gotta tell ya
That you've aged quite well
You haven't many wrinkles
(At least that I can't tell!)
But still you may be feelin'
A bit down on your luck
So settle in your rocker
And give a little suck!

Kacee, I just found this so you've probably given it to her by now but I'll give it a try.

Even though you're 40 now
you're still in perfect harmony,
aging like fine wine and
smooth as a symphony!

Shirley - Thank you so much for responding.

Just gave her a card with the candy bar inside. NO Poem!!! My dh saved me by buying their dinner!!!

Just want to let you know that I appreciate your talents and they are so helpful for word/rhyming challenged people like me. They can really help a gift become a gift if you know what I mean.

Have a super Saturday!!!

Lordy, Lordy, Lordy

What's an Aunt to do?

Too old for smacks
Too male for knickknacks
What can I get for my nephew?
(insert a graphic of a soldier)

How about a smile
That would stretch for a mile
But what else will do?
(insert graphic of huge smile)

A hug and a kiss
That sure won't be a miss
From this Aunt to you!

I guess these aren't exactly funny...but I couldn't think of anything funny about being so far apart from family like that...gosh...that would be so hard! Can you share a little more about the family and I'll try to write a funny one too if you'd like...or someone else will too I'm sure. Jennifer Byerly

Inside this birthday message
You'll find a special list
That comes to you with lots of love
Along with that a kiss

Read the list and you'll find
We've made some plans for you
As soon as you get back home
For all of us to do!
©Jennifer Byerly
---------------------------------------

Here's a birthday message
That's filled with kisses too
And when you open it up
They'll rain down hard on you

There's one aimed for your forehead
Another for your cheek
We've also included one for
Every day this week!

So don't wear your rain slicker
When you get this mail
Let the kisses rain on you
So that you can tell!
© Jennifer Byerly
-----------------------------------

This year on your birthday
Raise your face up to the skies
And feel my love reign down as
You slowly close your eyes!

Though an ocean separates us
We still share the same sky
The same sun shines upon us
The same moon on the rise

So tonight if you should want to
Please wish upon a star
And I'll be wishing with you
Across the miles far!
© Jennifer Byerly

or alternate ending could also be:

So if you take a moment
And rest your weary head
I'll be thinking of you too
As I lay in bed!

I like that poem Jennifer.
When my brother turned 40 (he lives in the UK & I'm in Australia) I printed out 40 different greeting card verses on different colored paper, some funny and some serious and folded each one up individually and small and then put them inside another normal 40th birthday card so when he opened that the little greetings went everywhere and once he'd retrieved them he got to read 40 little messages from me.

Hi Darla...........just adding my 2 cents here.
You could take 40 suckers and make a sucker bouquet with a sign in the middle, "40 SUCKS"!!. If you are real crafty...make black covers for the suckers. HTH

[> Re: Lori Jean -- Crafty43, 16:52:43 08/25/04 Wed [1]

Old age pills are good for a laugh.

I put jelly beans in a prescription bottle and put this on a label.

Old Age Pills
Black-is for the sadness and despair that come with getting older!
Purple-is for the color of your hair that you'll keep under a scarf and rolled!
Red-is for the arthritis and hurt you're feeling more and more!
White-is for your memory that you've already lost, I'm sure!
Green-is for constipation, more fiber is what you'll need!
Orange-is for deafness. Don't worry, you'll learn to lip read!
Pink- is for wrinkles. I'm sorry, but you'll have many!
Yellow-is for the sex, because you won't be getting any!

There is also Toilet Paper. I think you can find the poems on the project board. Good Luck and Happy Crafting!

Darla, I don't know of any over the hill or 40th birthday party popcorn wrappers. However, I do know of a site where they have a birthday candy bar wrapper that you can cutomize online, by typing anything you want on it. Here's the link: (deleted since it was no longer valid.)

40th Birthday Ideas - 40 Marbles, 40 Pennies, 40 Candles & More

Date Posted: 11:32:13 01/22/05 Sat
Author: Cindy E.
Subject: Suggestions to help me fill a 40th birthday jar!

My SIL is turning 40 in March and I want to fill a 40th Birthday Jar for her but need some suggestions. On the craftsayings site I found a page of sayings for 40th birthdays and so I am going to print this and cut it up into 40 parts then I am going to put in 40 loonies (one dollar Canadian coins) so she can buy herself something nice, then I thought of 40 candies for her sweet tooth but there I have run out of ideas. I want to make a label for the front saying what '40' items are in it and why so if you make a suggestion of something I could add, please tell me why you are suggesting it. THANKS! for any help given.

I know what pay backs are like. I am 2 years older then my DH. So when I turned 50 he knew better then to do anything "studid" because his 50th was coming(it is in March)BUT DD did it. She put a Happy Ad in the newspaper and had '50' cows put in my front yard!!!! I drive school bus and my house is on the way to the high school!!!! All the drivers were talking about it on the bus radio. Drivers from the other school districts even came out to see 'my' cows!!!! Then in the afternoon my bus broke down. It was smoking really bad- It had made a big bang and was really smoking. So I shut it off, got students off and called in that my bus was smoking - another driver told me that it was from all the candles on my cake!!!!LOL. DD said that DH will be getting 50 fish or 50 hogs this year. Can't wait to see.

Forty mints......every year of your life has been worth a "mint".

Forty mini dum-dum suckers......"FORTY SUCKS"!

Forty pennies.........your 2 cents have added up over the years!!

I thought about items like that but I'm trying to be 'nice.' You see, my brother (her husband) turned 40 a few years ago and we made him a 'nasty' gift and later this year my husband and I both turn 40 so we thought if we gave her somthing 'nice' maybe they would be kind to us on our birthdays ;-}

[> Re: Suggestions to help me fill a 40th birthday jar! -- crafterwannabe, 13:57:53 01/26/05 Wed [1]

One of my favorite things to give friends are Hershey kisses with a like number of my favorite funny chocolate sayings. So, to expand on Cheryl's idea, why not include 40 of your favorite chocolate sayings in with the kisses? I've done this ever since the sayings jars were discussed a few years ago - I've used both jars and baggies. Cut out the sayings into strips and fold as small as possible. See www.craftsayings.com Projects page to get detailed directions. Here's a collection of my favorite chocolate sayings. I know Shirley has a page on her site too.

Chocolate Sayings
We aren't meant to deal with life alone...
Where's the chocolate?

Me? Overdose on chocolate? Only if it's available!

If you eat chocolate every day for a century, you will live to be 100!

Chocolate? If a lot is good, and more is better, then too much is just right!

Women cannot live on bread alone - that's why brownies were invented.

The 10 best ways to relieve stress: 1. Eat a handful of chocolate. 2. Repeat 9 times.

It's not my fault chocolate chip cookies follow me wherever I go.

Chocolate...Just a little something to kill the taste of healthy food.

Chocolate in any language spells love.

Chocolate reduces stress and it's so much quieter than throwing a screaming fit.

In case of emergency - administer chocolate!

Chocolate - It's not just for breakfast anymore!

I want you, happiness and chocolate...but not necessarily in that order.

Love may come and go but chocolate is forever.

Q: Is there life without chocolate?
A: We don't know. No one dared to attempt it yet.

When in doubt...have some chocolate.

Steps for chocoholics:
1. Admit you have a problem.
2. Admit there is no cure.
3. Don't worry about it any more.

Life is like a box of chocolate, so take a bite out of everything!

Keep your hands off other people's bon-bons!

Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you chocolate: 7 days a week, 30 days a month, 365 days a year.

If you've got melted chocolate all over your hands, you're eating it too slowly.

Chocolate-covered raisins, cherries, orange slices & strawberries all count as fruit, so eat as many as you want.

The problem: How to get 2 lbs. of chocolate home from the store in a hot car.
The solution: Eat it in the parking lot.

Diet Tip: Eat a chocolate bar before each meal.
It'll take the edge off your appetite and you'll eat less.

A nice box of chocolates can provide your total daily intake of calories in one place.
Isn't that handy?

If you can't eat all your chocolate, it will keep in the freezer.
But if you can't eat all your chocolate, what's wrong with you?

If calories are an issue, store your chocolate on top of the fridge. Calories are afraid of heights and they will jump out of the chocolate to protect themselves.

If I eat equal amounts of dark chocolate and white chocolate, is that a balanced diet?
Don't they actually counteract each other?

Money may talk but chocolate sings! Beautifully.

Chocolate has many preservatives. Preservatives make you look younger.

Q. Why is there no such organization as Chocoholics Anonymous?
A. Because no one wants to quit.

If not for chocolate, there would be no need for control top pantyhose.
An entire garment industry would be devastated.

Put "eat chocolate" at the top of your list of things to do today.
That way, at least you'll get one thing done.

I will ... for chocolate.

Things are bad - send chocolate.

As a chocoholic, I am on my own version of a 12-step program.
I'm never more than 12 steps away from some.

Chocolate...coffee...men - Some things are just better rich.

A balanced diet is a piece of chocolate in each hand.

Love may make the world go round but chocolate makes the ride worthwhile.

To have one's diet defeated by chocolate is a delectable defeat!

The four food groups: Brownies, Chocolate Cake, Fudge, Diet Coke

When my time is up, let it be death by chocolate.

I'd stop eating chocolate, but I'm no quitter!

Any month whose name contains the letter a, e, or u is the proper time for chocolate!

Just hand over the chocolate and no one gets hurt!

What do you mean Chocolate isn't a food group?!

The answer is chocolate. Who cares what the question is?

If they don't have chocolate in heaven, I ain't goin!

When things are bad and getting worse...Keep some chocolate in your purse!

There's nothing better than a good friend, except a good friend with chocolate.

Warning! I have PMS and I'm all out of chocolate!

Friends and chocolate make life bearable.

Chocolate comes with its price...control-top pantyhose!

Friends don't let friends eat chocolate alone!

If God had meant us to be thin, He would NOT have created chocolate!

When the going gets tough, the tough get chocolate!

Nine out of 10 people like chocolate. The tenth person always lies!

Anything is good and useful if it's made of chocolate.

Forget love. I'd rather fall in chocolate!

So much chocolate - so little time!

Money can't buy love, but it CAN buy chocolate.

Man cannot live on chocolate alone - but woman can!

Chocolate solves everything!

Chocolate is the food group they don't tell you about!

Inside some of us is a thin person struggling to get out, but she can usually be sedated with a few pieces of chocolate cake.

Milk chocolate is a dairy product.

God sends no stress that prayer and chocolate cannot handle.

I am a woman of many moods, and they all require chocolate.

Warning! Chocoholic in Residence.

I'm going on a starvation diet. No chocolate for 24 hours!

In heaven, chocolate has no calories and is served as the main course.

The best things in life are chocolate.

Q. How many calories are there in a piece of chocolate?
A. Who cares?

Promise me anything, but give me chocolate.

Research tells us fourteen out of any ten individuals likes chocolate.

Exercise is a dirty word... Every time I hear it, I wash my mouth out with chocolate.

Chocolate - The breakfast of champions!

Will work for chocolate!

Chocolate is cheaper than therapy and you don't need an appointment.

There are four basic food groups:
milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate, and chocolate truffles.

A little too much chocolate is just about right.

After a bar of chocolate one can forgive anybody, even one's relatives.

I never met a chocolate that I didn't like!

There's never anything wrong with me that a little chocolate can't fix.

I have this theory that chocolate slows down the aging process.
It may not be true, but do I dare take the chance?

Me? Eat chocolate? Only when I'm hungry! Or not.

One of life's mysteries is how a two-pound box of candy can make a person gain five pounds!

The best thing to put in a chocolate cake is your teeth.

When the diet gets tough, the tough get chocolate.

Caramels are only a fad. Chocolate is a permanent thing.

Julie did you want funny or sentimental?
Anything else you want mentioned - how long you've known her, things she enjoys, her name, etc.

Julie Hope this helps
Sue

Jackie you're turning 40
WOW that's really old
but please ignore the wrinkles
as you have a heart of gold.

For the last 6 years or so
I've proudly called you pal
and know you can depend on me
if your ears and eyesight fail.

I'll help push your walker
and guide you across the street
and help find the perfect moisturiser
to hide age spots and crows feet.

Yes turning 40 will be great
just you wait and see
and it really is quite young
..if you pretend that you're a tree!

Re: forty year old birthday idea for dear friend -- Cindy E., 11:22:59 03/22/05 Tue [1]

My SIL had her 40th birthday on the 1st of March and I made her a 40th birthday jar using many ideas gathered from ladies in this group. I purchased a nice glass jar and put in:
40 marbles - for all those she had lost over the years
40 pennies - her two cents have added up
40 lollipops - for those days when being 40 sucks
40 candles - to light up her life
40 balloons - just for fun
40 sayings on turning 40 - from the craftsayings.com site
and then I added a package of star confetti for the 'star' of the day.

She loved it!

Hi Julie
Hope this helps
Sue :)
~ Change the word "Mother" to wife or girlfriend if you want.

Guess whose turning 40?
But is still a kid at heart
when Aston Villa play
he tears the place apart.
He really is quite terrible
with his beer and loud ways
but underneath he's adorable
that's what his mother always says!
So notify the riot squad
of this cricket loving guy
because when Wilba turns 40
you know he won't be shy!

If you go to craftsayings.com and on the left hand side under the Sayings heading there is a 40th birthday category. Check out what all the sayings are under that - there are some great ones!

tee...hee...does he work for State Farm by chance?

Like a good neighbor
Old age has arrived
Where stomach and chins
Take a plunging nose dive
Too bad you weren't smart
To prevent this occurrence
You should have bought yourself
Some old age insurance!

As you race along the highway of life
May you never meet worry
Or crash into strife
May your horn always honk
And you always have gas
May you keep your parts oiled
So that you last and last!
Oh forty is not such a bad year to know
If you look both ways wherever you go!

Hi Johnnie,
How about some of these sayings (my favourites) taken from...

40 Bits of Wisdom!Compiled & many originals by shirleyt @craftsayings.com
Collection - 1972 - 2002 by Shirley Thomas @ CraftSayings.com

(Use individually but please do not reprint entire collection or significant portion without copyright notice intact.)

Wrinkles are just antique smiles. You're very valuable.
Middle age is all the rage.
Age isn't important unless you're cheese or wine.
You're aged to perfection!
Finally things will start clicking for you. . . your back, neck, elbows, knees.
Now you start thinking about the hereafter... you go somewhere to get something, and then wonder what am I here after!
You don't have to worry about the police telling you to slow down now, just the doctor.
You're just 18 with 22 years experience.
Hang on! You've reached that age when everything either wears out, spreads out or falls out.
You're not old. You just became a classic.
Your belt may not buckle but your knees will.
No more health foods. You now need all the preservatives you can get.
Be nice to your kids. They pick your nursing home.
You're not old. You're vintage!
You are only old once -- enjoy it!

And here are a few more I found...

Forty is the old age of youth; fifty the youth of old age. ~Victor Hugo

Everyone is the age of their heart. ~Guatemalan Proverb

Grow old with me! The best is yet to be. ~Robert Browning

They say that age is all in your mind. The trick is keeping it from creeping down into your body. ~Author Unknown

Middle age is when you choose your cereal for the fiber, not the toy. ~Author Unknown

You can't help getting older, but you don't have to get old. ~George Burns

And here's a ditty from me...

The best time of life is Now
Whatever that time in your life may be
So think of today as the first of your rest
Whether you're 30, 40 or 50!
Doreen Scerri © 2006

Enjoy!
Doreen

Saying for Sponge Gag Gift

Author: Karen (va.)
Subject: 40th birthday idea for a man

Help!! I have checked all of the archives for gag gifts, sayings etc. They are wonderful. I am fixing a 40th party for my brother. Of course, we're doing all of the fun things like gag gifts etc. Need an idea for a sponge to go in the basket?????????? Instead of over the hill, we're doing a cake with "40 and still climbing" Does anyone else have any new ideas besides what was in the archives? Thanks for your help.
