Be sure you use LOTS of water. Use diamond coated drill bits. You should get about 50 holes out of one bit.
Did you know they sell glass blocks with the holes already drilled in them?
Hugs,
Lori Jean :^)

WHERE???????!!!!!!!!!!

[> Re: drilling holes in glass -- Melinda, 13:55:45 01/25/04 Sun [1]

I have the diamond drill bit. I got one that is 5/8inch. Easier to get lights in and out if necessary. Make sure there is water on the bit at all times. Keeps it cool and the block won't break. Life is much easier using this.

I too want to know where you can get the blocks with holes already in them.

[> Re: drilling holes in glass -- mary b, 14:45:54 01/25/04 Sun [1]

Me too! It would make thing a lot easier here at home if the glass blocks were already drilled.
Thanks in advance for telling us this bit of news.

I have been toLowe's, Home Depot, Ace hardware, Walmart, Meijers and can get only the 1/2 inch . Would love to get the 5/8th and yes please tell us where to get the glass blocks with the holes already in it. Linda aka Retschoolmarm

[> Re: drilling holes in glass -- Owen County Rick, 11:04:14 01/26/04 Mon [1]

I put the blocks in a tote filled with water, so the water covers the block about 1/2", then I use a cordless drill and a drill bit specially made for glass, found at Wal-mart. I have never had a block break using this method.

[> Re: drilling holes in glass -- craftyjodi, 15:55:01 02/01/04 Sun [1]

Hi - I don't drill my holes in the glass blocks anymore, I use the tapping screwdriver method now. It works so much easier and I have not had anybreaks yet. All you do is wet your block at the begining and then use a phillips screwdriver at an angle and tap gentle with a hammer, repeat until it makes a pin hole into the block and then I use a large metal file to make the hole as big as needed.

I have done many glass blocks this way and just finished a lamp last week. The lamp is posted on HGTV's holiday board - just do a search for block lamp when you get to that site and it should come right up.

Hi Donna...Are you talking about the hollow ones? I just bought some of those today at Lowe's. The ones I bought were approximately 8 inches square. They had a smaller size too, but I'm not sure what size it was.

[> Re: LARGE GLASS BLOCKS -- CJ in PA, 12:37:13 02/15/04 Sun [1]

Has anyone ever seen glass block fish aquariums or terrariums? I saw these yesterday & they were awesome. The aquariums had 1 beta fish in it & the terrariums had 2 plants. Aquarium only needed 1/3 of the water changed once a month. The terrarium plants were supposed to last 20 years by condensation forming on the glass. Selling them for $46.00. Very neat idea, now I need to find out how to make these.

[> Re: LARGE GLASS BLOCKS -- Melinda, 15:32:54 02/15/04 Sun [1]

CJ in Calif.
Where did you see the acquariams and terrariums? I would love to see a picture. Were they selling any that you saw?

I get my blocks from Home Depot or Lowe's. They usually sell for about 3.00 each. The problem now is the lights. But I know that there is a shop on line that sells them. I went to the Dollar General Store after Christmas and got 20.00 worth of lights when they were 1/2 off. Still using them pretty quick.

Good luck

[> Re: LARGE GLASS BLOCKS -- CJ, 23:28:42 02/15/04 Sun [1]

Melinda, I saw the aquariums & terrariums in a mall over the weekend about 1 hour from home. The salesman said they sold 5 that weekend. They were put out especially for Valentine's Day. I've tried searching the web for them, but no luck so far. CJ

WEll Dh finally returned from traveling and of course the first thing I had him do was read the post about drilling the blocks under water and he didn't see how that would work but he tried and did two right a way and none broke and he said it was really easy. So a big thank you to the gal that posted how she drilled them under water. I can hardly wait to make a slew of them for xmas gifts.

So glad it worked. My husband drilled one before breaking the next two. The drill bit gets very hot and that's why they break.

I'm wondering if we were just drilling too fast. Hmmm...THanks for the tips.

[> Re: glass block lights/drilling holes -- melinda, 13:46:28 03/06/04 Sat [1]

By all means be careful around the water. I simply put my block in the sink, ran water til it just covered it and drilled. I forgot to include not to get water in the motor. I am assuming since we are adults we would know but I guess that is not good to assume. SORRY!!! I think this would be great for anything ceramic or glass. AGAIN, remember to take your time.

[> Re: glass block lights/drilling holes -- Katie, 20:17:22 03/06/04 Sat [1]

Thanks for the input and tips everyone.Having never made any of these,it's hard to imagine water not spraying up on the drill.Going to borrow a cordless drill and give it a try in a couple of weeks.

[> Re: glass block lights/drilling holes -- melinda, 21:18:16 03/02/04 Tue [1]

I have a diamond bit for glass and tile. Here is what I do. Lay block in sink. Add water until just over the top. Start drilling....SLOWLY and without much pressure. Just make sure the water is just over the top of the block. This keeps the bit wet and cool all the time. Now when you remove the bit some water may get in. A good person told me this trick...Get a peice of rope or wick. I went to Wal-mart and bought like 1/4 yd. for .38. Put that in the hole water you have drained all the water you can. It will soak up the rest. I tried the blow dryer, shop vac., you know I tried it. This works the best for me. I made 2 blocks today.

[> Re: glass block lights/drilling holes -- Charleen, 23:33:51 03/02/04 Tue [1]

Believe me Melinda's suggestion works. WE were losing so many until we did them her way and haven't lost a one since. I wish I had done it before the holiday shows I wold of made a killing. GOod luck with them.

[> Re: glass block lights/drilling holes -- Katie, 09:33:29 03/03/04 Wed [1]

Thinking of trying these glass blocks for spring.Have a question that I'm wondering about.
Can I use my electric drill in a sink of water or should I buy a cordless drill??
Has anyone ever got an electrical shot from doing this?
Makes me kind of nervous and would like some positives before I try.

[> Re: glass block lights/drilling holes -- Renee, 21:39:42 03/04/04 Thu [1]

THanks for the tip. What's the difference between a diamond bit and a bit made for glass and tile?
Regarding the electrical shock I would think you'd be safe if your outlet was grounded (is that the right word)?....I know most kitchen and bathroom outlets are unless you live in an older home and it's not brought up to code. I don't know...I'm not an electrician!! That's a very good question though. WE broke 3 of them and gave up. I suppose that would be a good way to do ceramic tile, too. I wonder if I could lay the glass block in a cake pan and do it on the drill press? What do you think?
Thanks everybody!

[> Re: glass block lights/drilling holes -- marcia, 08:38:19 03/05/04 Fri [1]

i went to lowes on wednesday and bought 2 of the blocks. i talked with a little man there that's so good to help me with things. he told me to use the glass/tile bit. he also cautioned me about getting shocked. he said that i needed to be extra careful not to let water get in the motor of the drill, even with my cordless or i could get a jolt. i drilled my holes yesterday without a hitch. instead of putting the blocks down in water i just kept pouring small amounts of water on the area i was drilling. it worked wonderfully! hope this helps.

[> Re: glass block lights/drilling holes -- Lana, 23:17:00 03/06/04 Sat [1]

My husband drilled several for me using the glass and tile bit and a drill press. The secret is to drill them very slow. He drilled 3 dozen and didn't break any.

[> Re: glass block lights/drilling holes -- Renee, 22:25:48 03/07/04 Sun [1]

THanks, Lana. Neither one of us are very patient, I guess!
We'll give it another try.

DH uses the Diamond Hole Cutter from Harbor Freight. There's 2 different "sets". One set has a ¾" cutter and he used this when I was using the string Christmas lights in my blocks. Then, we order the set that has the 1" size. This is perfect for the snap-in type of bulbs. With either cutter, he can cut through a block in just under a minute!*S*

I know this will sound nuts but I have a friend who wants me to make a glass block to give her sister in law. Only problem, she is not crazy about her. She said that the only thing she does well is love and care for her brother. Pretty sad. But the girl wants material things but doesn't want to work. Seems to be lazy. Anyway everything I find is too mushy. thanks for your help in advance. She has a dog named Sophie and cat named Winston.

More Drilling help for Glass Blocks

Subject: Re: glass block help

I thought I would post this for anyone else needing help. Drill a 1/2" hole in bottom of block. I print my graphics on Avery full sheet label paper (white). I print 2 different graphics. 1 for the back and 1 for the front. I apply the label with the graphic, spray with Krylon workable fixativ, and when dry spray with 3-5 coats of triple thick gloss sealer. I use 20 light sets for the "brick" size block and 50 lights for the 4 x 6 block. I tie a ribbon with a bow on top.

[> Re: glass block help -- Christine, 18:39:56 05/22/03 Thu [1]

Linda,
I use the full sheet size labels on both sides of the glass block too, but before applying, I cover the image with clear laminating sheets (no heat needed)then trim the edges to desired size. Two of my glass block lights were made as memorials for people who passed away. I put the deceased's picture (printed on my computer printer onto the lg white label sheet + lamination)on one side & a poem, their name and "life" dates on the other side. One was for a friend's brother. She said they displayed it at an event held to raise $$$ for his surviving children. Both were well received and I feel will be cherished in the years to come.

[> [> Re: glass block help -- Linda, 18:58:09 05/22/03 Thu [1]

Christine, great idea...I will have to try that. What thickness laminate do you use?

[> Re: glass block help -- Christine, 20:52:49 05/22/03 Thu [1]

I checked & the package doesn't say. The brand is JM. It says "Clear * Heavyweight", but it doesn't seem very heavyweight to me. Not sure where I bought it, but probably Wal-Mart or any office supply store will have it.
I am having trouble with drilling. Have cracked the last 4 blocks we've tried. DH thinks drill bit is worn already. Sure hope not as I bought it new to do these. Can't find anyone with a drill press. So the drilling is really tedious and when one cracks near finishing...VERY frustrating! How are you drilling yours?

[> Re: glass block help -- Linda, 16:44:49 05/23/03 Fri [1]

I take them to a friend's house. He has a drill press but the speed is too fast. He uses a mill. What that is I don't know but I can tell you that some folks have good luck with the drill press if they go as slow as possible and some use water to cool down the bit. HTH

Here's the archived thread on everything glass blocks. Check the last post with the link to how Eileen does hers (looks like she used white label sheets though). (note: link deleted since it referenced this thread)

I haven't done the glass blocks but I use Avery Clear Full Sheet Labels (#8665) for other printable projects. I bought them at either Staples, Office Max or Office Depot (sorry, it's been awhile and I just don't remember which one).

In the art supply dept at Michaels, I got a book of Vellum, it was much cheaper than buying it by the sheet. I have to cut it down, but it works great for the blocks and the magnets and 4x4 tiles. Hugs, Judy R

Diamond Drill Bits for Glass Blocks

A friend of mine was making some of the glass bricks with the lights inside and said he had to use carbide bits (which he had to replace very frequently) because he couldn't find the diamond bits. Where is everyone finding theirs?? Or what kind of bit are you using??
Thanks!!

Most hardware stores have them here.

[> Re: diamond glass drill bit -- Wanda, 18:49:53 12/17/05 Sat [1]

you can find them on ebay and from Lee Valley stores

[> Re: diamond glass drill bit -- Retschoolmarm, 20:27:28 12/17/05 Sat [1]

I found an inch and 1/2 at Lowes ($9.99) and the guy there said he does glass blocks and that those were meant for ceramic tile, not glass. So I didn't get it. Some say they have gotten theirs at Harbor Frieght.

[> Re: diamond glass drill bit -- melinda, 23:25:09 12/17/05 Sat [1]

This is where I order mine from:

http://www.diamond-drill-bit-and-tool.c ... ll-Bit.htm

Very fast, great customer service and have never had one break. They are a little expensive especially getting near and inch but well worth it. Will last a while if you go slow and keep it cool.

[> Re: diamond glass drill bit -- Wanda, 06:48:50 12/18/05 Sun [1]

Retschoolmarm(Linda) , the bit for the ceramic tile also cuts glass . I checked with the customer service of Lee Valley ; this comapany is in both Canada and the United States .I've been gathering quite a bit of information on this project since it's one I'll be attempting in the New Year . This board has me all fired up with so many new ideas ; can't wait for Christmas to be over so I can get to them !!

Merry Christmas and warm holiday hugs , from Nova Scotia , Canada........

[> Re: diamond glass drill bit -- Grandma Bonnie, 12:26:31 12/18/05 Sun [1]

Ask how many blocks you can cut a hole into before it wears out - sometimes 3 - 4 and then you're back to breaking them and you need to use water when you are drilling the holes... a steady stream to keep the glass from getting too hot...

I've been thinking about this glass block idea. What if we put the graphic, say maybe a snowman, etc. with flakes, onto the sticky back clear plastic for our printer/copy machine? Then the graphic would have more light behind it?
Haven't done one yet, but plan to in the next year.

I received a glass block last week as a Christmas gift. It just had a ribbon around it and a hugh (I mean really big) beautiful bow on one side of it. The ribbon was wide and the bow covers one whole side of the block. It is really pretty. I should get DH to take a picture so I can post it.

[> Re: Does anyone have any glass block graphics to share? -- Crafty43, 11:58:32 12/21/05 Wed [1]

Would love to see a picture. I took a snowman graphic and made a box around it the size of the front of block. I then sponged on a light coat of white paint around graphic and the rest of the block and then tied a ribbon around the sides with bow on top. The white paint really makes it bright. Good Luck and Happy Crafting!

I am getting excited! I found online a site that sells the cling-on plastic that goes through our printers! Imagine all sorts of things. Even a print of the family by the tree. Then you could change it to flowers for Easter, Summer, Autum leaves, and back to Christmas. How about some Zin designs or whatever your decor is. Even a solid color would look nice. Will order this stuff after Christmas and try it.

[> Re: Does anyone have any glass block graphics to share? -- CountryBumpkin, 11:24:23 12/22/05 Thu [1]

I alway use a (real) picture I scan and resize. Last year, I did one for my best friend and use a picture of her Mom and Dad (both deceased) when they were young. This year, I've made one for my MIL using a picture of her Grandmother and Grandfather! (I'll try to post a pic later). I do this, because #1..I don't have to worry about using copyrighted material and #2..it can be left out and used year 'round. I hate putting that much work into something that will be packed away until next Winter/Christmas.

My sister's birthday is Jan.10th and I plan to do one for her, using either one of her little doggie or one of our Mom and Dad's wedding pics.

CountryBumpkin,
What are you printing the pics on? And how are you "attaching" them to the block?

I like the idea of using a photo..... I got really cute kids! LOL!! :0)

Using Plastic VHS Boxes for Lights Instead of Glass Blocks

Subject: Glass Blocks

For those of you that have made the glass blocks, what was the size of the blocks? 3 or 4 inch. Want to try and find some, have been told that the local Lowes doesn't carry them, they have to order them at about $5.00 per block, and they are 3 inch ones, is that about the right price?
Thanks
Diane

I don't know what part of the country you are in, but in Kansas and western Missouri the ones I bought were $2.39 to $2.89. Some were a large square, smaller square and then rectangle. I got mine from Lowes - Home Depot didn't carry them. You might check with some type of store that sells bathroom fixtures - these blocks were used as windows instead of glass in bathrooms several years ago. I think $5.00 a block is a little steep.

[> Re: Glass Blocks -- Diane, 15:36:20 12/30/05 Fri [1]

I live in a small towm in south georgia, almost into florida, seems like everything around here is a lot higher that anywhere else. When i read some of the crafts and what different ones pay for the materials, almost wish i lived somewhere else. lol not really. were your blocks 2 or 4 inches thick? and what kind of lights did you put inside? i was thinking of the small clear christmas lights, put a wide ribbon around the sided and a big bow on top and maybe some sort or something in the bow.
thanks
Diane

Sandra I like your idea so much, can you purchase the clear holders and if so where? I love it would you share your graphic as well. Hugs

[> Re: Glass Blocks -- Diane, 20:20:33 12/30/05 Fri [1]

Sandra I love your idea, is that just one of those off white boxes? would the lights get too hot against the plastic? what are you using for the weight? of course I have plenty of weight, if i could just figure out how to put it in a box. lol and yes where did you get your graphic?
thanks
diane

WOW!! Sandra,
That is fantastic and man are my wheels turning!!! I love it when a crafter uses common everyday items!! It's like that whole trash to treasure thing. It does have one draw back though....It promotes Pack Ratitis!! LOL!!!!!!

Is your graphic printed on a velum type paper? It looks kind of see through.
Thanks for sharing!

I made one for Valentines Day. It turned out pretty nice. I have left it on now for 8 hours. Like Sandra said it doesn't get hot just warm. I had a really hard time finding the cases. I finally found them at a local Vidio Store for .10cents. If you want to take a peek I posted it at

I wonder...could you use a clear dve case for this too. I know you'd need less lights. I'll have to give it a try, I know I have several clear dvd cases around here. Thanks for sharing this!!

[> Re: Glass Blocks -- Laura, 08:27:46 01/01/06 Sun [1]

Oh, one more thing, how do you put the graphic on? Is it glued?
Thanks,
Laura

[> Re: Glass Blocks -- Barboo, 08:33:20 01/01/06 Sun [1]

I just used Label paper than I laminiated it.

[> Re: Glass Blocks -- Sandra TN, 12:47:42 01/01/06 Sun [1]

Laura, my box has the sleeve on the front and back. I just printed my graphic out on plain print paper and then slid it in to the sleeve. This way I can change it each time. Barboo - I like yours also. Really cute!!

More on VHS Plastic Lighted Boxes

Subject: EXCITING NEW CRAFT - Lighted VHS Boxes

New craft to me: Lighted VHS boxes. I ordered boxes, now I don't have any graphics for them. GRAPHIC ARTISTS, please take a look at these and see what you can come up with. The dimension are 8" x 4-1/4. It seems they are made with a hole drilled in the back for a string of 20 lights, and a graphic on the front, much as we do the tiles. Then the light shines through.

The HGTV link was deleted here since it "fell off" their message board.

I am so excited, but just can't seem to get started. ssdmom did a blue bookmark for someone (I think it was a
cross) but I can't even find it now.

Anyway, take a look - it might be something you would be interested in. I have seen nothing like it in this area.
Hugs,
Claudia

Yeah Sandra shared this here back at the end of the year, and you can find info on PC Crafter too.

I have a question, are graphics put on the inside of the box or on the outside, i am having a unproductive day, thought process has gone on vacation. thankyou

Wow! Those are so unique! I am excited, too. Thanks for sharing, Claudia. Leave it to Eileen to come up with something stylish & clever. (((hugs)))

[> Re: EXCITING NEW CRAFT - Lighted VHS Boxes -- Lisa, 14:52:29 03/02/06 Thu [1]

I will definitely have to make some of these. I'll try my hand at some when I get back home on Monday. Going to see my grandson, Cooper. Roberta has the best graphics though. Come on graphic artists......the graphics on these could be anything you could think up. You can get the boxes at WalMart for a pretty good price. I bought up alot of 20 count lights at Christmas, but the Hobby Lobby in Abilene had lights out all year. I liked the patriotic one myself. Anyone have a clue as what to charge for them? Thanks for finding these ,Claudia. Hugs, Lisa

[> Re: EXCITING NEW CRAFT - Lighted VHS Boxes -- Sondra, 16:05:26 03/02/06 Thu [1]

I bought my clear VHS boxes off E-Bay ...100 for $10.00 making them 10 cents each.

I saw this a while back on HGTV and thought it was cute...

Sondra? What about the shipping??? I saw an auction on ebay for $10 but the shipping wasn't included in that price, it was extra. Just curious.

[> [> Re: EXCITING NEW CRAFT - Lighted VHS Boxes -- Sondra, 16:44:28 03/02/06 Thu [1]

The shipping to my zip code was $12.00...with the shipping figured in it makes them 22 cents each ... and I didn't have to go around trying to find them somewhere.
On most E-Bay post you can type in your zip code and it will figure the shipping so you will know before you place the bid.
These were a "Buy Now"...I didn't have to wait for a bid to end.

Here's one I came up with just playing around. Turned out pretty cute though. Snag if you want it. Don't know why it is so blurred.......but should print out clearer......I HOPE!!!!!!!!!! Hugs, Lisa

I do these like the glass blocks using my xyron laminator.
They are easier than the glass blocks as you don't have
to do any drilling. I got some cases from our video store for free.
