Subject: Iris Folding

My sister has arrived from England to stay with me for 2 months ( she was born in Australia)
She spoke of Iris Folding & how it uses the inside of envelopes. Ours are a bit boring, are the inside of envelopes interesting where you are?
By typing in Iris Folding, lots of sites came up on my search engine

IRIS FOLDING Iris Folding originated in Holland. Many of the envelopes in Holland have a pattern on the inside. Paper crafters have cut the patterned envelopes into strips and placed them on a pattern, resulting in a design that resembles the iris of an eye.

I saw this being done on the Carol Duvall show about a week ago.
Thank You for such clear and more in depth picture site.
I have some of the printed paper squares I got at Michael's .

There are yahoo groups you can join that gives you heaps of patterns. Go into yahoo groups and do a search on iris foldings. I belong to a couple and they are great. Also if you do a search on something like google or yahoo for iris folding you can also pick up instructions

I'm alway looking for new ideas for card making and this is a great one, as each time you do a pattern depending on the papers used each card is so different.

Hey, that's different.
It looks like it is done with material,
And I suppose you could do that. I am away from home but will get back on the weekend, and hope to be able to print out the pattern.
thanks for sharing

Thanks for telling us about this site Cindy - Iris folding is so lovely - the closest I've seen to it is teabag folding - I'd love to try. I have bookmarked it - thanks so much!

I've done this before, it looks lovely when it's finished.

[> Re: Iris Folding Card...anyone seen this? -- crafterwannabe, 13:23:40 01/17/06 Tue [1]

Wow, that is so cool as my dgd would say. At first glance I thought it seemed too complicated (for me) but I ended up printing the pattern and saved the site. Pattern is a lot smaller than it looks on screen. I was encouraged when I saw a comment (I think on the flower) that she had taught children as young as 7 to do this beautifully. Maybe there's hope for me too. Thanks so much for the site, Crafty Cindy! I hope Jazbo sees this - on the off chance she's never done it. Bet she'd love it.

I love Iris Folding and have done a lot of it. I also teach card making at a local craft shop.
You can use almost anything. Using material makes the card more bulky but gives a nice 'puffy' look. We have used ribbon and lace as well.
Nice paper to use for this is gift wrap paper because some of it is fairly thin. My absolute fav paper to use is Japanese oragami papers.
Here is a great site to learn different card making techniques. I learned here when I first started making cards about 4-5 yrs ago.

[> Re: Iris Folding Card...anyone seen this? -- Melis, 06:12:45 01/19/06 Thu [1]

This technique is reversed patchwork. When machine sewing a block pattern together you start in the centre and work outwards. With this you start on the edge and work inwards. I have loads of patchwork patterns that I have adapted to do this. My M-I-L made one with a group she belongs to and they ended up in the local paper. It certainly is very popular and the instructions that Cindy linked to is brilliant. - Melis

Thank you so much for the link - I made an Iris Folding Angel yesterday and would love if someone could come up with a saying or poem to put inside of the card. I'm a Chemo Angel and would love to start making these Iris Folding angels for cards to send out for my special assigments. Thank you..........Mary

I looked at that site a few weeks ago. I had more time this morning to browse around it and I can tell it's going to be one of my favorites. Thanks for sharing it.

How exciting! Everyday when I log onto my puter, I never know where the journey will take me. Today, thanks to Shilo, I am learning about Iris folding. But I think I will do something different with it.

A couple of weeks ago, I saw a program about a technique for quilting on Simply Quilts with Alex Anderson. I want to try the Iris folding with fabric strips instead, using the quilting technique as the 'matt'. Does anyone remember seeing that particular program? I will have to do some surfing.

Annie, have you tried this folding technique?

Great site, Shilo, & thanks for sharing it with us. (((hugs)))

Thanks Shilo for giving us the site. When my hard drive went so did all the sites I had and that was one of them. Thanks again, that is a great place.

Halloween Iris Folding Patterns

Subject: Iris Folding Pumpkin

Does anyone have an Iris Folding Pumpkin pattern to share? Or perhaps one for a mummy and dracula?
TIA, Pat P :-)

[> Re: Iris Folding Pumpkin -- Kimberly, 17:31:32 10/16/06 Mon [1]

This page has a bat and a ghost: http://www.irisfolding.circleofcrafters ... oween.html

I take just a outline from a coloring book and use as a pattern for mine so that would be an idea for your pumpkin.
Kimberly

[> Re: Iris Folding Pumpkin -- Pat P, 19:51:32 10/16/06 Mon [1]

Thanks Kimberly,
I appreciate your help. I do have the bat and ghost, but thought that I saw a pumpkin somewhere ... can't find it. But that's ok ... I'll make due with the bat and ghost. Thanks for helping me out.
I was having trouble with posting earlier and got two message posted instead of one. Sorry to everyone for the duplicate.
