Subject: How do I cut a globe in half?

I have a multi-colored world globe whose main colors are cream and light teal. It feels like heavy cardboard and is extremely firm. My question is, what is the best way to cut it in half, right along the equator line? I want to take the top half, put fringe around the edge of it and use it as a lampshade. Will probably have to paint the inside a light color or use vellum perhaps??? Any hints or ideas to help me out? Thanks.

I found this link that says to use an X-acto knife to cut the tape on the equator to separate the 2 halves.
Hope this helps!
