couldn't find the poem but found the directions you add to the bag, hope this helps.

BAKED POTATO BAG

This simple bag creates a "just right" baked potato in your microwave. The inside is well done, yet moist, while the skin remains tender. The bag will cook one to four medium sized potatoes at once.

Simply wash and dry your Potatoes. DO NOT PRICK!! wrap the potatoes in a paper towel and place in bag. Microwave as instructed by your manufacturer, usually 8 to 15 min. Time will vary per microwave.

When serving, do not cut with knife, simply use a fork. potatoes will be very fluffy.

let the bag air dry.

ENJOY!!

I've made quite a few of them, I used a cotton material with bright vegetables on it so you don't have to embroder the potatoe. I have given them to my friends and everyone loves them, they also use them for sweet potatoes. Murielle

I feel really stupid for asking this but is the baked potato in a bag supposed to be a bag to keep the potato warm? The example is adorable but I want to make sure before I try a poem...sorry to be a dork.

This is awesome. I live in potato country in Maine. In fact I can look out my window and see the fields. Jenjoy, if you click on the picture on the left with the saying it gives you the directions. Happy Crafting!

If you want a perfect tater
Tender, moist and cooked
Place it in the bag
Then go and read your book
When the microwave
Has cooked it for a spell
Open up the bag
And you'll be pleased as hell!

Oh-I'm sorry...I meant to write this as the ending:

After the mircrowave
Has cooked it a set time
You'll find you have a tater
That's tastin' mighty fine!

Does anyone know a link for the pattern idea? I have seen them at craft shows. I saw that someone had quilted material. Will acrylic lined fabric work? I would think it would be very hot when touched.

Is there a link and a poem to attach?
Thanks

A short and sweet saying about do not prick the baked potato and follow microwave instructions for baking potato might be included....I am no poet and don't try to be. So.......please

[> Re: Microwave Potato Bags -- melinda, 22:06:01 06/25/04 Fri [1]

I don't have the poem but would love it. I am using cotton material from Wally World. I used the grapes, beautiful red apples on a navy background, ivy and some red hat material. If I have to say so myself, they look nice. I have to get more. I don't have near enough but wanted to be sure I could this. Once my dumb brain caught on it was easy. Like I tell everyone------pictures and maybe instructions. If you send just instructions, they have to be really easy or explicit.

Thanks ladies for all your help. I look forward to seeing that potato poem.

LINK FOR DIRECTIONS

http://www.creativesalon.com/freebies.html
Here are some directions I found in the archives....hope they help.

Re: Potato Bag???? -- Claudia, 12:49:02 11/18/04 Thu [1]

I found a graphic in my Print Shop Program which was a large potato with a smiley face. I put the first part of the explanation on the front with the "potato" and the directions on the back. I used the post card format and got 4 to a page. I am sorry but I am computer illiterate and have no idea how to send this, but maybe someone else can use some of this information and get a tag made for you.

I have done these for a couple years now and they have been good sellers - very steady but not very spectacular!

Re: Potato Bag???? -- miel, 15:21:20 11/18/04 Thu [1]

I made some for Christmas last year, They sell like hotcakes but thought they would look special with a Christmas tag attached. Claudia I use material with veggies or tea pots or anything kitcheny instead of embroidery or graphics.
Murielle

Re: Potato Bag???? -- sara, 18:34:16 11/18/04 Thu [1]

I bought material back in the early fall to make these.
I was waiting to find out if you had to be careful of the material used because of fire. Someone brought that up so I hesitated till I heard again from anyone.
Can you let me know Claudia if there were any problems.
Thanks.

Re: Potato Bag???? -- miel, 19:14:16 11/18/04 Thu [1]

The bag has to be 100 percent cotton, the batting doesn't matter but you do have to be cautious not to over heat the bag I put a caution tag with mine, if you leave them in for to long they will scourch.
Miel

Re: Potato Bag???? -- Wanda, 23:23:40 11/17/04 Wed [1]

Oh I'd love to have that tag too also how do u make your potato bag i saw a pic of one but wondered if it was quilted too

Re: Potato Bag???? -- Claudia, 20:36:02 11/19/04 Fri [1]

Potato Bags Burning: I have never had one to burn, nor have I heard of one burning, except the one I use all the time and I laid it on a spot of coffee that had boiled over and I didn't know it....it scorched a small place.
So, I think the lesson learned here is not so much the fabric content as it is the oven being completely clean!
The batting I use is not 100% cotton I am quite sure. I use a lot of vintage fabrics and some of them are not marked 100% cotton and it doesn't seem to make a difference. My microwave is automatic for potatoes, you just key in "how many". I generally add an extra potato unless they are very small in order to have them really soft. I bake more sweet potatoes than I do white - and they always turn out wonderful. Sorry for so much about this, but I love the bags and enjoy making them.

Re: Potato Bag???? -- miel, 21:47:55 11/19/04 Fri [1]

This is the caution I include with my potato bags, just for safety so no one burns themselves or the bag.
Murielle

CAUTION TAG

CAUTION: Potatoes will get very hot and in some cases fabric has been scorched. To avoid this problem do not microwave potatoes too long, make sure the bottom of the oven is clean, and do not allow the bag to touch the sides of the microwave. In some cases you may have to reduce the power level in your microwave.

Thanks Murielle for sending the info; it is enough to get started. Franie, thanks for sending the link. I am still looking for the site I had discovered earlier in the week. It had detailed instructions, along with detailed pictures. My friend is going to help me make them for a show, and she can't read a pattern very well. The instructions were 1-2-3, very simple. This is such a neat site, people helping people. I hope to help someone eventually; however, I have been out of the loop so long, I'm trying to catch up!

Subject: Question about making Baked Potato Bags???

Good Morning Ladies,

Boy, I didn't realize how many great projects I have missed over these past few months... I was looking through the archives and came across this one!

I guess I'm a bit dense and need someone who has made or is making these to answer a couple of questions for me.

I noted that its best to use 100% cotton for the bags and linings (I have muslin and cotton prints) but wondered about the batting.

I have a bunch of fleece batting (approximately 1/4 inch) in loft - would this work or should I purchase regular quilt batt???

Do you use any kind of closure? Perhaps velcro?

Do you have the exact demensions for a bag that would do 2 and 4 potatoes?

Thanks in advance for your help...
HUGS - Jude!

Please be careful with these...they have been known to catch on fire. It happened to me and I used all cotton and my microwave was clean. Just a warning for those that plan to sell them. Dang it....I loved using mine and it made the best baked potatoes.

[> Re: Question about making Baked Potato Bags??? -- Grandma Bonnie, 08:59:19 10/31/05 Mon [1]

I use the 100% cotton batting - it is tan in color - named Pure/soft and natural. I have heard that they may catch on fire - I believe it is a dirty microwave that catches fire - not the bags. I make my bags 10" by 16" with a 3" overhang to tuck in the bag. I have been selling them for 4 -5 months for $5.00. I also sell the baggy bags in the same colors (they hold plastic bags - easy to do...) Let me know and I can post a picture of the potato bags... I use a serger and it takes minutes to put together...

[> Re: Question about making Baked Potato Bags??? -- Claudia, 18:36:11 10/31/05 Mon [1]

I tried to take a picture of some of mine, but was in a hurry and didn't do such a great job. I also got the tags, both front and back. Sometimes I put them in a gallon ziplock bag and put the instructions inside and the tag on the outside. Other times I do not bag them and put the instructions on the back side of the tag.

Jude, maybe this will give you some ideas.
Hugs,
Claudia

Warning About Using Velcro on Bags

potato bag -- huskerfan, 17:13:31 11/02/07 Fri [1]

I have made these bags and I like using it. My mom uses hers alot also. I got a new microwave and it is stronger than my last one and it started the velcro on fire. So my answer to this is don't use velcro and make the bag a little longer so you can just fold it over when you use it. It was scarey. Just my advice.

I bought one of these at a craft show last year and just love it! You do have to watch it. Mine started to smell "scorchy" towards the end of the cooking. So I cut back on the time and they still came out nice and fluffy! My son got a job driving a truck and he left yesterday for the road...and took my potato bag with him!!! So if you see a guy cooking a couple potatoes in an apple potato bag - that's my son and MY POTATO BAG! LOL

I would like to know if any of you made some of the potato bag and not put the cotton batting in and does it work about the same way? Just made with plain fabric. A friend said she saw some made this way at a craft show.

[> Re: Potato Baker Bags site -- grandmabonnie, 09:51:12 03/11/09 Wed [1]

Del - the batting I use is thin - It is needed to absorb the steam created by the microwaving. I have read of some people using 100% felt...

Posted later... Wow - I thought I had come up with something new for the potato bags - WRONG!!! 100% cotton felt is expensive and most of it is not cotton!

[> Re: Potato Baker Bags site -- Vicki Bandy (Happy), 15:33:57 03/11/09 Wed [1]

I have one of these that I bought at a craft show. I love mine and my whole family uses it. About how much do you all pay for these at the craft shows around you? They go for $4 to $5 dollars around here.

[> Re: Potato Baker Bags site -- Del S., 01:41:52 03/12/09 Thu [1]

At the craft show we get $5.00 and they sell good. What else could be used beside the batting or cotton felt to obsorb the steam. As I find even the thin batting is hard to sew with. And they say the cotten felt is too expensive. Anyone have any good ideas of something else that can be used and easy to sew with.

I make the baked potato bags. You do not pierce the potato and bake it according to the time that your microwave says. Everyone is different. Make sure everything you use is 100% cotton. Poly will melt or burn.

Re: help! potato baker bags -- Shirttails, 22:21:32 11/17/09 Tue [1]

I have sold over 100 of these since June. All were lined with 100% cotton flannel! Make sure all three layers are 100% cotton! They will be fine. I've added a tab to the tator bags so when you have to dry them, you can hang them on a hook or from a hook magnet on the refrig. THey get wet when microwaving. They hold the moisture. The potatoes are flaky. Mmmmmmm good.

Re: help! potato baker bags -- ginnyp, 11:02:19 11/18/09 Wed [1]

Ida, I found some at $ 12.oo a yard and not much of it... that was too pricey for me so came home and went through my about to be trashed bath towels. they are 100% cotton still good just getting faded from washing. I use the flannel on one side and the print on the other side of the towel... hope this helps....

Re: help! potato baker bags -- garnet, 16:02:37 11/18/09 Wed [1]

Joann has a line of cotton flannel for about $5 a yard. It is sometimes on sale half price, or you can use a 40% coupon when it's not on sale. You can use a coupon for a single cut of as much as you want. I don't think it's quite 45" wide.

Cotton flannel shrinks in the laundry, so you may want to run it throught the washer and dryer before making up potato bags.

here is something that I have written on mine (sorry there is no credit on it so I don't know the author.)

BAKED POTATO BAG
This simple bag creates a "just right" baked potato in your microwave. The inside is well done, yet moist, and the skin remains tender. The bag will cook one to four medium sized potatoes at once. Simply wash and dry your Potatoes. DO NOT PRICK!! Wrap the potatoes in a paper towel and place in bag. Microwave as instructed by the microwave manufacturer. Time will vary per microwave. When serving, do not cut with knife, simply use a fork. Potatoes will be very fluffy. Let the bag air dry.

ENJOY!!

I use mine all the time for potatoes, sweet potatoes and corn on the cob. I wrap mine in a wet paper towel and usually takes about 6-8 minutes for two medium sized potatoes. You will enjoy it, just give it a try.

Subject: One more potato bag question

I got to read over the thread and learned alot about the microwave potato bags, the only question I still have is, do you wash the material before sewing it or wash the bags after finishing or don't wash at all. I know the material looks better new and not washed when selling things.
Thanks for any help.

I do not wash the material at all.

Thanks for the help. I always think the material so much nicer unwashed before selling. I found some of the "Warm Tater" batting at Jo Anns and is $7.99 a yard pre packed. I went to my Craft Warehouse and they have it on a bolt for $3.69 a yard..... guess where I bought mine at.
I know some are using flannel, but it's so thin and shrinks when washed, so I'll try the batting for now.

i use the prequilted material that they have at walmart and just any cotton material to line it. i machine embroidery 'tater baker' on the quilted material. i have had no problem with mine.

Debra, be careful with the quilted fabric. What is it padded with? I bet its poly! It might just melt with the new microwaves that are 1000 watts or better.

I didn't have any problem with the ones I made but when I had to get a new micro I got one that had more power and my bag started to burn and I got it out before it was a real fire. I would be careful if I was sewing them to sell.

Linda, it very possibly might be that the lining was poly.. or the fabric had poly in it. The lower watt older microwaves don't have time to melt but the higher watt will melt and burn poly, for sure...... Everything in, on, and around the potato bag has to be 100% cotton and then you are not guaranteed it won't melt. I know when I am not sure about the content of some fabric I had in the house, I put pieces of it in the microwave to see if it melts or shrivels a bit.
