Subject: ? about jars with hidden items

Can someone tell me how to make these or where to find out how to make them in the archives? I work with a senior citizens group, so I was thinking about doing a smaller version using a baby food jar. Also, is there a poem that goes with it? Thanks.

Is this the one you mean?

Fill the jar with bird seed or rice, etc. Hide little objects in it. Make a list of the things you put in so the receiver will know what to look for and how many they find. Tape the list on top of the lid. Glue the lid shut.

Treasure Jar
This is a little treasure jar
It has lots of hidden things
See how many you can find
And how much fun it brings

I wrote this just now but there are probably others in the archives.

Thx so much kelli and lou! I was referring to the one with the bird seed but the other one will be great to use with my craft ladies. Thx again. Sipsy

I saved this from several years ago. I don't know who to give credit to. If it's yours please step forward.

Same idea as above. Put treasures into bird seed in a jar, print list of items on a slip of paper and add this poem.

Treasure Hunt in a Bottle:
Some pirates got it all mixed up and did things wrong way 'round!
They put the treasure in a bottle, and buried the map in the ground!
Their treasure was some silly stuff ,
then dear old Polly Parrot added all her extra seeds.
So, find the twenty items here; no two are quite the same.
Don't open up the bottle, though, As that would break the game!

I saved the same thing as Nancy K - with the exception of one line.

Treasure Hunt in a Bottle
Some pirates got it all mixed up and did things wrong way 'round.
They put the treasure in a bottle, and buried the map in the ground!
Their treasure was some silly stuff like needles, screws, and beads,
Then dear old Polly Parrot added all her extra seeds!
So, find the twenty items here; no two are quite the same.
Don't open up the bottle, though, as that would spoil the game!

Items for Treasure Hunt in a Jar

Finch seed

penny
nickel
pop top
safety pin
button
bobby pin
rubber band
macaroni
marble
paper clip
bead
tack
paper fastener
toothpick
sunflower seed
common pin
nail
pink star
screw
twisty tie/bread tie

I used plastic peanut butter jars. Filled them about half full of finch seed; added all of the items and then added more finch seed - a little over three-quarters full - so there is enough room for seed and items to roll around. I also printed out the poem on 2" x 3" label and that added a little twist - because about the time you saw something - it was hidden behind the label. My husband cursed me several times for putting the label there - and I just told him "that's part of the game"!!! I made about 10 of these for our church bazaar and I heard they went right away. I don't know what they sold them for tho-

You might want to look at this old archives page too - lots of great ideas on Treasure Jars from Jazbo.
Note: Link deleted 6/07 - unfortunately, the old archives are no longer available.

To avoid accidents due to broken glass, you might consider using plastic empty bottles when working with seniors or children.

Poems: "Puzzle" Treasure Jars

Subject: Puzzle Jar poem

does anyone have a poem for the puzzle jars? I made a few tonight and used plastic peanut butter jars. I put 15 items in them because I thought more might be too many. I hope someone has a poem or could one of the poets please come up with one. I want to put one in a basket of goodies to give someone who "claused" us.

Inside this jar you will find
Items that come from me
Guess who it is from
Then go and "claus" the next family

There are 15 items buried here
How many can you find?
This is a little adventure
A 'cool' idea of mine
Just turn the jar around and around
And name each treasure you see
Don't stop until you find them all
It's fun!! I'm sure you will agree

Wendy,
Would you mind posting how and what you make your puzzle jars with? TIA, pc cook

Thanks ladies for the great poems. I really appreciate your help.

For my puzzle jars I used the small peanut butter jars. I think they may have been 18 oz. but I'm not positive. Then I filled the jar 1/2 full of bird seed and made a well in the middle. In the well I put my objects and covered with bird seed to to lower rim of the jar.
My objects were: small rubberband, button, a icicle(a mini ornament for the small trees), a small plastic spider from halloween(about 1/2" in size), safety pin, a pony bead, paperclip, small pom pom, jingle bell, small heart bead, nail, a mini deer, screw, thumbtack, and a small butterfly bead.

you can use any small item you want. A pebble was one I wanted to use but the stones were snow-covered and I didn't feel like digging. Just look around the house for small items. Small wiggle eyes would work great too.

Hope this helps.

Wendy,
WHat's the significance of the items you put in the jar?

they are just small items that I found around the house. I wanted to make it fun for the kids but not too easy. I guess if you wanted to you could do a theme.
