Subject: Picture Of Angel Pins I'm Working On :^)

Hi Ladies,
I thought I'd post a pic of the angel pins I've been working on, before I left for work. I'm sorry the pic isn't very good. Right now, I don't have a digital camera, so I had to scan the picture. The pic doesn't do it justice! It really sparkles. :^) I put a quarter next to the pin, so you could see how small it is.

Note: LJ deleted picture of her pin from her photobucket album but you can follow the directions below for either the smaller pin angels or the larger ornament angels.

[> Re: Picture Of Angel Pins I'm Working On :^) -- Lori Jean, 16:54:15 09/07/05 Wed [1]

Hi Ladies,
My inspiration for the angel came from Bev. Thanks Bev!
For Pin
I used the narrow wire ribbon - about 1-3/4" wide. I bought a beautiful roll at Walmart with pink roses and lots of gold. I wish you could see it in person. It really is pretty. You can use the wider wire ribbon for larger Christmas angel ornaments (2-1/2" wide), which is what I'm going to do.
Okay, lets see if I can explain the instructions well enough:

Instructions:
Wire Ribbon Angel Pin (narrow ribbon) or Ornament (using wider ribbon)

Take the wire ribbon and fold back and forth like a fan (start by making the first fold away from you). Make sure there are 7 pleats. This will be the dress. Staple at the very top. Once you staple the dress at the top, trim the excess off the top, THEN pull the dress open. You need to trim the excess to be able to glue the wings on the top of the dress. Now you have the dress! (Note from Carolyn: Because I made out better with ribbon that had the extra wide wire trim, I had more success cutting (trimming) the "dress" just below the wire BEFORE I stapled the one end. When I stapled before trimming the wire, my staple didn't want to go through smoothly.)

Take the same wire ribbon and fold back and forth like a fan and make sure there are 5 pleats. Fold in half, so you can see where the middle is and staple flat on that center fold line. Pull the pleats open on both sides. Now you have wings!

Hot glue the wings to the dress. Place a flower/bow on the front, where you hot glued the two pieces together.

Hot glue a small gold jingle bell at the top of the wings (head) when using the narrow ribbon and a medium size bell when using the wider ribbon.

I don't bother with the halo, because the head is just too small to glue a halo too.

If you make Christmas angels using this method, with the wider ribbon, I do use the plastic rings and glue it to the bell. You can find all kinds of sheer, sparkly Christmas ribbon to make the angels out of.
Hope this helps!
Hugs,
Lori Jean :^)

You made those wonderful ribbon angels. How long was the ribbon for the body and how long was the ribbon for the head.

[> Re: ? for Lori Jean -- Lori Jean, 13:16:51 09/11/05 Sun [1]

Hi Jean,
The ribbon for the body (the small pins) was approx. 8 inches. The ribbon for the wings was approx. 6 inches.
I just held the ribbon and folded it back and forth, right on the roll....so it's an approx. measurement.

Hugs,
Lori Jean :^)

Pictures: Ribbon Angel Ornaments Following Lori Jean's Instructions Above

Subject: Ribbon Angel Ornaments Inspired by Lori Jean

Here are some wire ribbon angel ornaments I made after seeing Lori Jean's post and instructions. I still need to loop a hanger of narrow sheer ribbon or cord through the jingle bell head. Can't remember if LJ mentioned in her post that all ribbons are not alike. The sheer ribbons fold nicely for sharper pleats. I also thought it was easier to work with the ribbons that have the slightly wider, flat wire edging.

I love these too. They are so easy, yet so impressive. I sit and fold them while I am watching tv..In fact, I made about 40 of them tonite. They sell like hot cakes. I put them on a card with the snow flake angel saying, and people don't bat an eye at $2.50 a piece. They are awesome.

[> Re: Ribbon Angel Ornaments Inspired by Lori Jean -- Ruby,Vt, 09:12:30 10/16/05 Sun [1]

You can make these from wall paper books also ,they are also very pretty.

[> Re: Ribbon Angel Ornaments Inspired by Lori Jean -- PattyWV, 11:01:21 10/16/05 Sun [1]

Great job Carolyn. I just love the cross beads. They would be cute as pins too. Maybe make a mini tag that she holds in place of the flower/cross that says Jesus is the reason for the season. It would be nice to wear during the holidays.

Thanks, everyone, and especially Lori Jean for her instructions and help. What I love about them is that a wannabe can make them and they are pretty! I made these (and more) for a bazaar but I'll be tucking a few into Christmas stockings too. I just love quick and easy crafts.

Ribbon Angel Poems

Subject: Poem Needed - Ribbon Angel Ornaments

Dearest poets, nobody knows more than me just how many angel poems are available between our archive board and Shirley's Yo-Yo angel page. Honest, I looked at most of them. While there are several poems that would be just fine, I'd really prefer one that says it's a ribbon angel (although that might be obvious) and that it's an ornament (I am packaging these so the hanger may not be obvious). With the dozens (and dozens, and even more dozens) of angel poems, this IS asking a bit much but I sure would appreciate your giving it a try. If it could be generic (so that anybody could give it to anybody) that would be icing on the cake. Thanks!

Karen, I love your poem too. Thanks so much! I have LOTS of angels and really like it when I can use assorted poems on everything. The folks at the bazaar say that sometimes people can't make up their minds between one poem and another so they buy two. That's a good thing!

lol! I get an "F" for not reading all the directions though...you asked for a poem that said "ribbon angel"! DOOH!
Simply substitute the word "precious" for ribbon in the first line and WAAAAaalaaaaaaaaa! It's like magic: you have a ribbon angel poem. :)
Ladies-nice work above!!! :)

Oh, mercy, as my dear mil used to say! Doreen, you're not too late. Yes, I should be at those toppers right now but instead I'm reading the board. So glad I checked here again first so that I can add yours too. Thanks so much - they're really great.
LOL, Jennifer, I cannot tell a lie - I inserted "ribbon" after precious.

Ladies, I'm overwhelmed by your response and I know many other members will be using your poems on their ribbon angels as well. We are so blessed to have you all! Thankful Hugs, Carolyn

Archiver's Note: There are other styles of ribbon angels also on the Angel Archive Board. These poems would be equally as wonderful with them.

More on Fan-Fold Wire Ribbon Angels

Date Posted: 16:23:03 11/09/05 Wed
Author: Garnet
Subject: Making Lori Jean's Angels

I bought 2 1/2" sheer sparkle ribbon with gold flat-wire edges and couldn't wait to begin folding and figuring out how to staple and glue. Five different styles of ribbon (40% off at Joann's) found their way into my basket before I could move on to jingle bells (also 40% off.)

After completing the first angel and trying to get the knack of cutting and assembling these little beauties, I decided to measure the ribbon used for the first one. Decided on 7" for the body and 5" for the wings. My spools were 12' long, and each foot would make an angel.

A piece of adding machine tape with half inch marks made a good cutting guide. It was a struggle to see the marks with a disappearing purple marker on the sheer ribbon. Then I realized I could lay the ribbon down on the guide and fold against a fingernail at 7". Then a quick fold down with edges aligned and a crimp on the other side was all it took before using fine cutters to cut each edge and scissors to cut across the ribbon.

Laying the 7" ribbon piece down on the guide, I did the bend against the fingernail at each inch mark - on both edges of the ribbon. Then it was easy to bend and crease at each bend.

I partially straightened the "top" edge and trimmed off the edge. Then a final fold and creasing and the top was ready to staple. BTW, the cutoff edge is like a heavy gold cord and I threaded it through the jingle-bell head for the hanging loop.

I did the same thing for the 5" wing piece EXCEPT I left both wire edges on this piece. (Well, I made a mistake and cut the edge off the first wing piece. Sigh)

Now there was one problem. I could not get the stapler to handle the thick folded wing, so I did a hand stitch at the center.

Now that I will have several folded wing pieces, I think I will line them up to machine stitch the centers assembly line fashion and just snip them apart.

The first few folds went so slow I almost gave up. So that's why I thought I would share my experience with you.

These little angels are such a delight. Thank you for sharing instructions and thanks to Crafterwannabe for her pictures and helping me learn to post.

Thanks for your suggestions. The first couple I did were a little slow too. I think that just happens when you're doing something for the first time. I sometimes think I'm a little too particular but you must be worse than me being so very precise with your measurements. I'm glad you figured out a way to get them like you wanted and shared your technique. I bet your angels are beautiful. I'm still making them (have to - I've got to justify my new-found ribbon "collection"). A couple of other members mentioned sewing their angels also. I had difficulty stapling the very top of the "dress" but found that if I trimmed the wire off BEFORE stapling, the staple went through nicely. It was the thicker wire edge that would not allow for a flat staple job. I think I added that note to Lori Jean's instructions. The wing should be the easier part to staple. It almost sounds like you are doing what I started out doing. I was stapling the wing folded (very thick). You fold the wing just to establish a center line, lay it back out flat, and then staple flat on that center line. Does that make sense? When I finally started doing that, it was SO much easier. I too am grateful that Lori Jean shared the instructions with us and I know she's grateful that Bev shared the angels with her. Hope you'll keep telling us about new things you try.

[> Re: Making Lori Jean's Angels -- Judy R, 20:01:04 11/09/05 Wed [1]

Oh my, all that measuring would make me dizzy. I just started at the end of the bolt, fan folded approximate 1/2" pleats, 7 for the skirt and 5 for the wings, and folded till I reached the end. Then I stapled some, stitched some, whatever I was in the mood for at the time, and glued them together. I used the wire that I cut off the top of the skirt to make a little bow for the neckline, and the halo. I used a little wooden ball for some, and a pearl for some for the head. Any way you make them, they are darling, and they look so elegant. People love them, I don't know how many I sold at $1 before I found out people would gladly pay $2.50 for them. lol Live and learn. I guess I craft like I cook, I ad lib a lot. If it doesn't work for you one way, just try something else. That's the neat thing about crafting, there is no right way or wrong way, just your way and all the other ways. Happy crafting , Judy R

[> Re: Making Lori Jean's Angels -- Garnet, 15:14:16 11/13/05 Sun [1]

Now that I'm over halfway through cutting and folding my 60 angels, I'm beginning to be a little nervous about using my hot glue gun for the first time.

Any pointers? I bought both the low and high heat guns and some glue sticks.

[> Re: Making Lori Jean's Angels -- crafterwannabe, 10:54:19 11/14/05 Mon [1]

Garnet, I could use a lesson in "Glue Gun 101" myself. I don't use it all that often and when I do I know that I should be doing better. Just like with the cutting, folding and stapling - it will take you 3 or 4 angels to get the hang of it (or to feel more confidant using the gun). I only have a mini high temp gun so that's what I used. If you have both, I think I'd try the low temp first. I have a few tips. 1) Keep a small dish of ice water nearby so you can quickly dip any burned fingers. 2) Make sure you cover whatever surface you are using. I wrap a large acrylic cutting board with heavy duty al. foil and keep my glue gun on it. 3) Putting the angels together: I put the glue on top of the dress and place the wings over it. Then I glue the V in the wings and place the bell on top the glue. As advised by LJ, try to place the bell so that one "solid" side faces the front. I like to place the bell towards the front of the V. Not sure why (except I'm not that adept with the gg) but for a time I was putting the glue on the bell and placing it down in the V of the wings. Got way too many glue "strings" not to mention glue on my fingers and the bell. Not sure when I had the lightbulb moment to put the glue on the wings and not the bell, but I'm glad it came rather quickly. Lastly, I glue the front of the angel where I plan to add the flower, cross or whatever you are using. The glue dries quickly so if there's any positioning to do when you add the wings, bell or flower, do it quickly! You will have glue strings. Don't worry about them. I pull any away after everything is completely dry. Hope this helps a little. Sorry I just saw your post...

I bought a cheap pair just for things like this

Re: ? for those who have made the wire ribbon angels -- crafterwannabe, 15:38:03 11/12/05 Sat [1]

I didn't want to use my good scissors either but my scissor collection needs help - some old ones that I use for paper cutting made a mess of the ribbon part. I finally used an old pair I keep in the kitchen but were sharp enough to also cut the ribbon nicely.

Re: ? for those who have made the wire ribbon angels -- Garnet, 16:57:44 11/12/05 Sat [1]

I use fine wire cutters to cut through the wire and into the ribbon on each edge. Then scissors to cut the ribbon itself. That wire is surprisingly tough.

DH helped me assemble a box of small tools for jewely, sewing machine, chisel for cutting buttonholes, etc. He included two sizes of wire cutters, one a little heavier duty than the one I use for the wire ribbon.

Re: ? for those who have made the wire ribbon angels -- Joyce, 23:30:39 11/12/05 Sat [1]

I bought the cheap scissors from the dollar store for about $1.99 and use them to cut my wire or whatever else needs cutting. They last quite awhile and because they are so cheap it does'nt hurt to throw them away. I have had mine to cut wired ribbon for over 100 angels so far and they are still working pretty good.
Take care,
Joyce

More Tips When Making Ribbon Angels

Subject: For Those Who Make The Ribbon Angels....(Lori Jean )

Ever since Lori Jean posted instructions on how to make ribbon angels, I've been making them for all the holidays...I just bought some pretty Valentine ribbon...so here's my tip...after you fold the skirt part and you're ready to staple it...sometimes there is too much bulk and you have to cut off the wire part on top...save these pieces...I use them for trim on my recipe cards or for scrap booking pages....the trims are just as pretty as the ribbon....

[> Re: For Those Who Make The Ribbon Angels....(Lori Jean ) -- crafterwannabe, 15:15:10 01/29/06 Sun [1]

Hi Leli - Thanks so much for your tip! I always cut the wire off before I staple the dress and, of course, have just been putting it in the trash. I'll look at it a whole new way now. I'm making Valentine angels too but I'm just using red ribbon left over from Christmas. I loved the design on the ribbon but wasn't thrilled with the finished product so didn't make many using that ribbon during the holiday. But I'm using it now!

I take the wire that I cut off and trim it close, then I make a bow and the halo out of it. It is quite impressive.

I save the cut off trim from each skirt to thread through the jingle bell head and form a hanger loop for the ornament. I first tried to knot the ends together. Then I glued them together. But I ended up wrapping the ends around each other to form a circle, and I like that best.

Sorry, but I am fairly new to this site and have no idea what the Ribbon Angels look like. Would someone be kind enough to direct me to an instruction sheet or picture of it? I love angels and this one sounds interesting. Thanks!

Thanks for the quick response. Most of the instructions seem simple enough to follow but am a little puzzled on just what you are cutting off the "dress" part. I am assuming you cut right above the stapled part so it will be pretty flat to glue the wings on. Is that pretty accurate? BTW, the angels are truly beautiful. I am going to try my hand at making enough to decorate my gifts this next Christmas. Jane

I believe it is just the wire that you are cutting off so that it is easier to fold and staple.

You fold so you have 7 pleats for the dress first (Just holding the roll of ribbon in my lap, I fold the first pleat AWAY from me and then you have only folds facing you when the angel is finished). The only thing you cut off is one end of the wire (after folding). Lori Jean's instructions say to staple just below the wire rim first and then cut off the wire. My staple was never smooth when I did this. So, while holding the fold, I cut the wire off first and then staple immediately. Either way works. They are a lot of fun to make and people love them!

Using 2 1/2" sheer, wire-edge ribbon, I cut a piece 7" long for the skirt.

Then I cut the trimmed wire edge off one side. Be careful not to cut too close or you will cut into the trim that you want to stay wrapped around the wire.

Save this strip to use as you wish: halo, bow, or hanger threaded through the top of the jingle bell head.

Now the skirt is ready to be folded into pleats, squeezed together at the cut edge (top), and stapled.

Jane, those angels go really fast if you make a production line of it. I sit at my desk, which I have covered with a slit-open plastic trash bag, and cut a whole bunch of skirt lengths, then just fold, staple, fold, staple, fold, staple. Then I cut an equal amount of wing lengths, and fold, staple, fold, staple. Then I cut an equal number of lengths of thin gold string for the hangers, and tie knots in all. Then I plug in the glue gun, and do all the gluing at once.

I couldn't get the large pearls for the heads, so I used bells. Or you can paint small styrofoam balls for heads, too.
